About the Role

This is a high-impact, hands-on role for an experienced construction accountant to take ownership of a growing HVAC company’s accounting function and help build the processes, reporting, and financial visibility needed to support continued growth.

The position offers the opportunity to lead day-to-day accounting operations while partnering closely with ownership and project teams. You will play a key role in strengthening systems, improving workflows, and enhancing financial insight across the business.


Key Responsibilities

Accounting & Reporting

  • Own full-cycle accounting: general ledger, month-end close, financial statements, and reconciliations
  • Coordinate with external CPA firm, including year-end close, reviews, and audit support
  • Establish reliable processes, internal controls, and reporting cadence


Project Accounting

  • Lead job costing, WIP reporting, and percentage-of-completion (POC) accounting, including analysis of over/under billings
  • Manage progress billing (including AIA billing) and retainage tracking
  • Partner with project managers, estimators, and field teams to ensure accurate and timely project financial data


Cash Flow & Operations

  • Oversee billing, AR/AP, and cash flow across project cycles, billing timing, and retainage
  • Provide visibility into project profitability, margins, and cost performance
  • Support leadership with actionable financial insights and decision-making


Payroll & Compliance

  • Manage and improve payroll processes for ~100+ employees (biweekly)
  • Ensure accuracy and compliance with certified payroll and prevailing wage requirements


Systems & Team Leadership

  • Supervise and support 1 accounting staff (AP/AR/bookkeeping)
  • Implement and optimize Sage 100 Contractor
  • Improve system utilization, reporting capabilities, and workflow efficiency


Qualifications

  • 5+ years of accounting experience, including construction or HVAC/project-based accounting
  • Strong expertise in:
  • Job costing and WIP reporting
  • Percentage-of-completion accounting
  • Progress/AIA billing and retainage
  • Experience with payroll, ideally certified payroll
  • Proficiency with Sage 100, Sage 100 Contractor, or similar ERP systems
  • Experience working with external CPA firms and supporting year-end close
  • Strong understanding of cash flow management in a project-based environment
  • Ability to operate independently in a hands-on role
