About the Role

This is a high-impact, hands-on role for an experienced construction accountant to take ownership of a growing HVAC company’s accounting function and help build the processes, reporting, and financial visibility needed to support continued growth.

The position offers the opportunity to lead day-to-day accounting operations while partnering closely with ownership and project teams. You will play a key role in strengthening systems, improving workflows, and enhancing financial insight across the business.

Key Responsibilities

Accounting & Reporting

Own full-cycle accounting: general ledger, month-end close, financial statements, and reconciliations
Coordinate with external CPA firm, including year-end close, reviews, and audit support
Establish reliable processes, internal controls, and reporting cadence

Project Accounting

Lead job costing, WIP reporting, and percentage-of-completion (POC) accounting, including analysis of over/under billings
Manage progress billing (including AIA billing) and retainage tracking
Partner with project managers, estimators, and field teams to ensure accurate and timely project financial data

Cash Flow & Operations

Oversee billing, AR/AP, and cash flow across project cycles, billing timing, and retainage
Provide visibility into project profitability, margins, and cost performance
Support leadership with actionable financial insights and decision-making

Payroll & Compliance

Manage and improve payroll processes for ~100+ employees (biweekly)
Ensure accuracy and compliance with certified payroll and prevailing wage requirements

Systems & Team Leadership

Supervise and support 1 accounting staff (AP/AR/bookkeeping)
Implement and optimize Sage 100 Contractor
Improve system utilization, reporting capabilities, and workflow efficiency

Qualifications

5+ years of accounting experience, including construction or HVAC/project-based accounting
Strong expertise in:
Job costing and WIP reporting
Percentage-of-completion accounting
Progress/AIA billing and retainage
Experience with payroll, ideally certified payroll
Proficiency with Sage 100, Sage 100 Contractor, or similar ERP systems
Experience working with external CPA firms and supporting year-end close
Strong understanding of cash flow management in a project-based environment
Ability to operate independently in a hands-on role
