The City of Fulshear Internship Program provides students and recent graduates with a dynamic opportunity to gain hands-on experience in local government operations. Designed to provide hands-on insight into municipal operations, this program offers internship opportunities across key City departments—including Communications, Economic Development,Human Resources, Police, Public Works, and Utilities. Under the guidance of experienced professionals, interns will assist with special projects and administrative tasks, contributing to the overall efficiency and success of city operations. General Responsibilities Across All Departments:
  • Assist with department-specific projects, research, and administrative tasks.
  • Perform office duties, such as answering phones, responding to emails, data entry, and filing.
  • Prepare reports, presentations, and other documents as needed.
  • Maintain department records, databases, and document management systems.
  • Organize and coordinate meetings, schedules, and departmental events.
  • Collaborate with other City departments, outside agencies, and the public.
  • Support public relations efforts by preparing materials, brochures, and handouts.
  • Provide customer service by responding to inquiries from the public and City staff.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism while handling sensitive information.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
Communications:
  • Develop and launch the foundation of a City blog using WordPress aligned with the strategic communications plan
  • Create and curate content highlighting departmental initiatives, projects, and community impact
  • Collaborate with departments to gather stories, interviews, and key information for publication
  • Establish sustainable content workflows and structures for ongoing use after the internship
  • Support storytelling efforts by enhancing the quality and consistency of written and visual content
Economic Development Corporation:
  • Capture high-quality photos and video of local businesses to build a marketing B-roll library
  • Assist with content creation for social media, website updates, and promotional campaigns
  • Support business outreach by engaging with stakeholders and gathering community insights
  • Organize digital media assets and assist with development of marketing materials
Human Resources:
  • Shadow core HR functions, including recruitment, onboarding, risk management, and employee relations
  • Support Benefits & Wellness and Culture & Engagement initiatives
  • Assist with development of the SPARK Leadership Program
  • Contribute to training development, including FMLA resources for supervisors
  • Update and maintain HR-related content on the City website, including safety and risk information
Police Department
  • Support community engagement and crime prevention initiatives to strengthen public relationships
  • Assist with administrative functions, records management, and basic reporting
  • Help coordinate community events, outreach programs, and public safety initiatives
  • Participate in ride-alongs and departmental briefings to gain operational exposure
Public Works
  • Assist with right-of-way (ROW) acquisition and project coordination for roadway initiatives
  • Support field inspections of Capital Improvement Program (CIP) projects to monitor progress and compliance
  • Assist with AutoCAD drafting to support small internal projects
  • Contribute to website updates to improve public communication and transparency
  • Assist with SharePoint migration and digital document organization
  • Provide general administrative and project support to the Public Works team
Utilities:
  • Assist with inspection, marking, and exercising of valves to support system maintenance and reliability
  • Monitor and record water quality data to support reporting and water loss tracking
  • Support operational efficiency efforts by analyzing plant and lift station run times
  • Gain hands-on experience in water and wastewater operations, supporting conservation and environmental initiatives

While performing duties of this job, the intern must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time. The intern is occasionally required to stand; reach; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The intern must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. This position requires constant operation and use of computer, phone, and other office equipment. May be subject to repetitive motion, such as typing, data entry, and vision to monitor.Education, Training and Experience Guidelines:
Work requires enrollment in a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree program; or have recently completed a degree within the last six months. Candidates should have an interest in government service and demonstrate the following:

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Knowledge:
  • Understanding of municipal operations, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance and effective communication.
  • Proficiency in English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation to draft clear and professional documents.
  • Familiarity with modern office equipment such as computers, printers, telephones, and office software to efficiently complete administrative tasks.
  • Knowledge of budgeting, financial reconciliation, and asset management for finance and public works responsibilities.
  • Understanding of social media engagement, legislative priorities, and interagency collaboration for administrative and HR functions.
Skills:
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, multitask effectively, and meet deadlines while managing workload efficiently.
  • Strong ability to ensure accuracy in documentation, reports, and correspondence, reducing errors and improving efficiency.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills to convey information clearly, interpret
  • Ability to work under constant interruptions, assess situations, and determine appropriate responses while maintaining focus.
  • Capacity to conduct research, analyze data, and compile reports to support department initiatives.

License, Certifications, and Other Requirements:
  • Valid State of Texas Driver License
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen, criminal background, and MVR check
  • If placed with the Police Department you will be required to pass the CJIS clearance check.
