Position Summary

The Tax Senior Advisor is responsible for managing complex tax engagements, reviewing work prepared by junior staff, providing high-level technical expertise, and serving as a key client contact. This role requires strong analytical ability, advanced knowledge of federal and state taxation, and the ability to lead multiple engagements simultaneously in a fast-paced public accounting environment.


Key Responsibilities

1. Engagement Management

  • Plan, coordinate, and execute complex tax engagements for individuals, corporations, partnerships, and trusts.
  • Review tax returns prepared by staff for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable tax laws.
  • Monitor project timelines and budgets to ensure efficient engagement delivery.

2. Technical Expertise

  • Research complex tax issues and prepare well-documented technical memos.
  • Stay current on changes in federal, state, and local tax law.
  • Identify tax planning opportunities and communicate recommendations to managers and partners.

3. Client Service

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for assigned clients; respond to questions, provide status updates, and resolve issues promptly.
  • Develop strong client relationships by delivering high-quality service and proactive communication.
  • Participate in client meetings and assist in presenting planning strategies and compliance findings.

4. Staff Leadership & Development

  • Supervise, coach, and mentor staff accountants and tax associates.
  • Provide feedback on performance and assist in staff development and training.
  • Delegate work effectively and ensure staff are properly supported.

5. Compliance & Quality Control

  • Ensure all work complies with firm policies, professional standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with internal quality control procedures and participate in peer reviews when applicable.
  • Maintain organized workpapers and documentation in accordance with firm protocols.


Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • Master’s in Taxation (MST) or Accounting preferred.
  • CPA license required or actively pursuing.
  • 3–5+ years of progressive tax experience in a public accounting firm.

Technical Skills

  • Advanced knowledge of federal, state, and local tax codes.
  • Experience with tax research tools (CCH, RIA Checkpoint, BNA, etc.).
  • Proficiency with tax preparation and workflow software (e.g., UltraTax, ProSystem fx, GoSystems, Axcess).
  • Strong Excel and workpaper documentation skills.
