Position Overview
The Controls & Automation Engineer is responsible for designing and supporting automated systems used in cable handling and assembly operations. This role plays a key part in advancing automation initiatives, including autonomous cable loading, gantry-to-pan connection systems, intelligent pan stacking, and real-time defect detection during shipload operations.
This position works cross-functionally with mechanical, quality, and manufacturing engineering teams to ensure systems are production-ready, safe, reliable, and cost-effective. Flexibility to support off-shift operations is required based on business needs.
Key Responsibilities

- Design, implement, and maintain PLC-, industrial PC-, and robot-controlled automation systems
- Integrate motion control systems including servos, gantries, and position feedback devices
- Support machine vision systems for cable inspection and alignment
- Troubleshoot and resolve controls-related issues using structured problem-solving methods
- Develop and validate safety-critical controls, including interlocks and fail-safe systems
- Lead equipment commissioning, trials, and acceptance testing
- Collaborate with mechanical engineering on equipment design, guarding, and risk mitigation
- Analyze downtime data and drive continuous improvement initiatives
- Develop and maintain technical documentation (wiring diagrams, PLC code, O&M procedures)
- Update Standard Procedure Instruction Manuals (SPIMs) to reflect system changes and improvements
- Partner with Training & Certification teams to ensure accurate operator training materials
- Train operators and technicians on system operation and troubleshooting
- Identify opportunities to improve automation efficiency and reduce manual intervention
- Support additional projects and responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field preferred
- 3+ years of hands-on experience in industrial automation or motion control (experience may substitute for degree)
- Strong PLC programming experience (Allen-Bradley or equivalent preferred)
- Experience with motion control systems and industrial automation hardware
- Knowledge of industrial networking and safety system design
- Experience integrating sensors, cameras, and machine vision systems
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical problem-solving skills
- Ability to collaborate effectively across all levels of the organization
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and mechanical drawings
- Proficiency with data acquisition tools and technical documentation systems
- Familiarity with Lean manufacturing or continuous improvement methodologies preferred
- Willingness to work flexible shifts as needed to support production
