Contracted Teaching Artist Position: Teaching Artist Reports to: Associate Education Director Job Type: Part -Time Compensation: $20/hour for training and planning time, $50/hour for teaching Mission Statement: Inspired by the intelligence and emotional wisdom of young people, we create professional theater, foster inclusive community, and nurture meaningful learning through the arts. Position Overview: Metro Theater Company is seeking enthusiastic, empathetic , and social justice minded teaching artists to teach our flagship education program: Building Community Through Drama (BCTD). BCTD is expanding into 4th and 5th grade classrooms in multiple districts throughout St. Louis County. The program consists of 5 sessions (45 -60 minutes in length) in individual classroom s during the school day. The curriculum is developed and continues to evolve to meet the needs of our school partners. Through a co -teaching model, teaching artists will facilitate community building activities, theatre games, role playing activities, and lead reflecti on discussions. The curriculum explores social and emotional learning, develops empathy, and investigates historical and current instances of bullying and oppression. Building Community Through Drama is currently underwritten by St. Louis County Children’s Service Fund. Position Responsibilities: • Facilitate lessons with best teaching artistry practices for assigned classes ; • Facilitate activities and provide feedback to students in a manner consistent with Metro Theater Company’s teaching philosophy ; • Participate in planning meetings with MTC education team ; • Participate in teaching artist training session(s) to gain a thorough understanding of the curriculum ; • Communicate with school partners and classroom teachers about any relevant updates or changes via email ; • Troubleshoot challenges that arise when onsite ; • Setup and cleanup supplies and materials used ; • Fill out and submit post -class e-form with requested details ; • Take daily attendance in class ; • Participate in check -in conversations with co -teacher and education staff . Preferred Skills and Experience : • A deep respect for the intelligence of young people, and enthusiasm for the mission of Metro Theater Company; • Degree in Theatre Education, a related field , or equivalent practical experience; • Experience facilitating community building, creative drama , and/or arts integration in PreK -12 classroom settings; • Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team, both in and out of the classroom with people of v arious backgrounds; • Enthusiasm for participating in a co -teaching model; • Strong classroom management skills • Demonstrates a strong understanding and responsiveness to diverse cultural backgrounds and perspectives. • Flexibility and empathy for the day -to-day challenges and changes that arise when partnering with public schools; • Open to growth through feedback and reflection; • Excellent communication skills, especially while working with young people , school staff and classroom teachers , either in person or via email; • Knowledge of Theater of the Oppressed pedagogy is a plus; • Strong sense of humor and knows how to have fun at work; • An interest in building relationships with educators; • Given the nature of our work in school sites across the St. Louis region, Teaching Artists must have access to reliable transportation .
