Job Overview

We are seeking a highly experienced Government Accounting Consultant to work in a consultative capacity under the direction of the Deputy Accounting Administrator. This role is responsible for providing high-level financial and governmental accounting expertise, with a primary focus on bank reconciliation oversight, internal controls, and ACFR reporting compliance.

The ideal candidate will possess deep expertise in GASB standards, GAAP principles, and governmental financial reporting, and will act as a strategic advisor to leadership, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and risk mitigation across financial operations.


Key Responsibilities

1. Bank Reconciliation & Financial Oversight

  • Review and evaluate multiple bank accounts to ensure accuracy and compliance
  • Design and implement robust reconciliation procedures and oversight mechanisms
  • Identify financial risks and recommend mitigation strategies
  • Ensure adherence to internal controls and accounting best practices


2. ACFR Reporting & Compliance

  • Establish and monitor checks and balances for ACFR preparation and reporting
  • Collaborate with program teams to ensure timely and accurate financial schedules
  • Ensure compliance with:
  • Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR)
  • Schedule of Expenditures of Federal Awards (SEFA)
  • Single Audit requirements


3. GASB & Government Accounting Expertise

  • Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) on GASB standards
  • Research, interpret, and implement new GASB pronouncements
  • Ensure financial reporting aligns with GAAP and GASB requirements
  • Support preparation and review of complex financial statements


4. Internal Controls & Process Improvement

  • Advise leadership on internal accounting controls and governance frameworks
  • Recommend improvements to financial processes and policies
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives across accounting operations
  • Provide expert consultation to internal teams and external stakeholders


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • Minimum 5+ years of accounting experience
  • Strong expertise in:
  • GASB standards
  • Governmental accounting & fund accounting
  • Financial reporting and compliance
  • Experience with ERP/accounting systems for maintaining financial records
  • Proven ability to analyze financial data and recommend solutions


Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA (Certified Public Accountant) – Strongly Preferred
  • Experience in government, municipality, school district, or public sector audits
  • Hands-on experience with ACFR preparation and review
  • At least 3+ years in governmental accounting environment
  • Experience working with state or federal compliance frameworks

  • Ability to work independently as a trusted financial advisor
