Job Title: PhlebotomistJob DescriptionThis Phlebotomist role focuses on providing high-quality blood collection services for patients of all ages, with a strong emphasis on pediatric and neonatal draws in a high-volume clinical environment. The position requires demonstrated proficiency in venipuncture and capillary techniques, a solid understanding of safety and compliance standards, and the ability to support and train other patient service technicians. You will work closely with a lab supervisor and team lead while contributing to a patient-centered healthcare environment.
Responsibilities
- Perform blood collection using venipuncture and capillary techniques for patients across all age groups, including infants, children, adolescents, adults, and older adults.
- Carry out pediatric and neonatal blood draws confidently and safely, including difficult draws in a busy medical office building setting.
- Manage high-volume phlebotomy workloads, drawing approximately 45–55 patients per 8-hour shift in outpatient settings and 20–30 patients per 8-hour shift in inpatient or hospital settings.
- Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of safety and compliance standards, following all relevant protocols and procedures at all times.
- Effectively communicate the importance of safety, compliance, and best practices to colleagues and contribute to a culture of quality and patient care.
- Provide orientation and on-the-job training for patient service technicians and support staff as needed.
- Use laboratory information systems (such as Cerner or similar systems) to register patients, label specimens, track orders, and document work accurately.
- Deliver professional, courteous, and compassionate customer service to patients, families, and clinical staff.
- Maintain excellent attendance, punctuality, and professional behavior while adapting to changing work demands and varying shift times between 6:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m.
- Travel between multiple medical office building lab locations within South Orange County as scheduled, ensuring consistent quality and efficiency at each site.
- Adhere to all facility policies and procedures, including proper specimen handling, labeling, storage, and transport.
- Collaborate with the lab supervisor, team lead, and broader laboratory team to support continuous improvement and high standards of patient care.
Essential Skills- Current CPT I license.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least six months of phlebotomy experience in an acute or sub-acute setting, with a preference for one year of experience.
- Demonstrated proficiency in venipuncture and capillary blood collection techniques, including difficult draws.
- Hands-on experience performing neonatal and pediatric blood draws on actual patients beyond classroom heel-stick practice.
- Ability to work effectively with pediatric patients, including infants and children, in a clinical environment.
- Proven ability to handle high draw volumes, including 45–55 patients per 8-hour shift in outpatient settings and 20–30 patients per 8-hour shift in inpatient or hospital settings.
- Experience using laboratory information systems and general computer proficiency, with familiarity in systems such as Cerner or similar platforms.
- Strong customer service skills with the ability to interact professionally and compassionately with patients and staff.
- Reliable attendance, punctuality, and professional conduct.
- Flexibility to work varying shifts and hours between 6:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. throughout the week.
- Ability and willingness to travel between multiple medical office building labs within South Orange County.
Additional Skills & Qualifications- One year or more of phlebotomy experience in an acute or sub-acute healthcare setting is strongly preferred.
- Previous hospital-based phlebotomy experience is a plus.
- Experience in high-volume outpatient laboratory environments (such as large reference labs) is highly valued.
- Experience working specifically with pediatric and neonatal patient populations.
- Comfort working in both outpatient clinic and inpatient hospital environments.
- Capacity to adapt quickly to different locations, workflows, and teams while maintaining consistent quality.
- Strong communication skills to explain procedures, address patient concerns, and collaborate with clinical staff.
- Demonstrated commitment to patient-centered care and service excellence.
Work EnvironmentYou will work in a high-volume clinical laboratory environment primarily located in medical office buildings (MOBs) across South Orange County, with the potential to transition into a main hospital laboratory setting upon permanent hire. The role involves rotating among multiple draw stations and clinic locations, performing blood draws in busy outpatient clinics and, at times, in inpatient or hospital settings. Work hours can fall anywhere between 6:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m., seven days a week, requiring flexibility with scheduling. The environment is fast-paced and patient-focused, with a strong emphasis on safety, compliance, and teamwork. You will use modern laboratory information systems, such as Cerner or similar platforms, along with standard phlebotomy equipment and supplies. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Irvine, CA.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $21.00 - $25.00/hr.
