Job Title: PhlebotomistJob DescriptionThe Phlebotomist provides expert support in blood collection and specimen preparation, ensuring accurate, timely, and compassionate service for patients across a wide range of ages and backgrounds. This role focuses on performing blood draws and related laboratory tasks while maintaining patient comfort, specimen integrity, and adherence to established procedures and regulatory standards.
Responsibilities
- Perform venipuncture and other blood draw procedures using straight needles and butterfly needles while minimizing patient discomfort.
- Collect, label, and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, in accordance with established procedures and test requirements.
- Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection processes to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
- Match laboratory requisition forms or computer-generated labels to specimen tubes and verify that all information is 100% accurate.
- Centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders to maintain specimen integrity.
- Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes following protocol for transport.
- Package specimens for transport, following all procedures necessary to preserve specimen quality and integrity.
- Fully understand and accurately follow physicians’ orders related to laboratory testing and specimen handling.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks in accordance with laboratory standards.
- Update patient information accurately in the appropriate systems or documentation.
- Review and verify all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts or orders to ensure correctness.
- Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results as needed to address inquiries in a professional manner.
- Attend annual department trainings and remain current with procedures, protocols, and best practices.
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and follow all safety and infection control procedures.
- Wear appropriate attire and personal protective equipment as required for safe specimen collection and handling.
Essential Skills- 2–3 years of experience performing blood draws in a clinical or laboratory setting.
- Proficiency in phlebotomy techniques, including venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Demonstrated experience in blood draws, specimen labeling, centrifuging specimens, and preparing samples for testing or transport.
- Ability to accurately match laboratory requisition forms or computer labels to specimen tubes and verify all information.
- Strong administrative skills and attention to detail when updating patient information and recording maintenance data.
- Ability to clearly and courteously explain specimen collection procedures to patients.
- Knowledge of proper specimen storage requirements, including temperature controls and handling protocols.
- Understanding of and compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations and laboratory safety standards.
- Ability to read and communicate laboratory results over the phone in a clear and professional manner.
Additional Skills & Qualifications- Experience with infant and pediatric blood draws is a plus.
- Experience with specimen processing, including splitting and freezing specimens, is highly beneficial.
- Comfort working with a wide demographic of patients and putting them at ease during procedures.
- Willingness to participate in annual departmental training and ongoing skill development.
- Ability to travel within the state and adapt to working in different locations as needed.
Work EnvironmentThis role offers variety for individuals who enjoy a change of scenery and in-state travel, as you may work in multiple locations while supporting patient care and laboratory services. The typical schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with rotating Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The work is performed in clinical and laboratory environments that require adherence to safety protocols, including the use of appropriate attire and personal protective equipment. The setting involves regular interaction with patients, healthcare professionals, and laboratory staff, with a focus on accurate specimen handling, regulatory compliance, and high-quality patient care. No holiday or vacation work is required for this position.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Newburgh, NY.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr.
