DEFINITION
To perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled gardening and turf maintenance duties in the development, maintenance, and repair of landscaped areas, parks, playgrounds, and public facilities; to operate a variety of park maintenance equipment; and to participate in the beautification of parks, playgrounds, and public facilities.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Park Maintenance Worker I- This is the entry level class in the Park Maintenance Worker class series. Positions in this class normally perform most of the duties required of the II level, but are not expected to function at the same skill level and normally exercise less discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits a pattern which has been established and explained before the work is started. Under the flexible staffing concept, positions assigned to the Park Maintenance Worker I level may reasonably expect to progress to the Park Maintenance Worker II level with training, experience, and satisfactory job performance.
Park Maintenance Worker II- This is the journey level class in the Park Maintenance Worker series. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the Park Maintenance Worker I class, or when filled from the outside, require prior experience in the maintenance of parks and landscaped areas. Appointment to the higher class requires that the employee be performing substantially the full range of duties for the class and meet the qualification standards for the class. All positions assigned to the class require the ability to work independently, exercising judgment and initiative.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Park Maintenance Worker I
Receives immediate supervision from a Park Maintenance Crew Supervisor or equivalent.
Park Maintenance Worker II
Receives general supervision from a Park Maintenance Crew Supervisor or equivalent.
May exercise technical supervision over less experienced park maintenance personnel.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - Essential functions may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Maintain plantings and grounds, recreation and play areas, and irrigation systems.
Water, weed, trim, renovate, and fertilize lawns, shrubs, trees, and flower beds.
Operate a variety of power-driven equipment such as tractors, mowers, aerial lifts, and loaders.
Rake leaves, clean walks, fields, courts, and other facilities; load trimmings on trucks.
Spade and otherwise cultivate ground around plants and shrubs, including mixing and applying fertilizers, insecticides, and herbicides.
Plant and maintain trees, flowers, and shrubs.
May purchase minor supplies and plantings.
Pick up rubbish and paper; perform general grounds cleaning.
Maintain and prepare athletic fields.
Maintain batting cages and field netting.
Maintain, upgrade, and install irrigation systems; troubleshoot controllers and electronic valves.
Drive vehicles used to transport materials, tools, and equipment as required; clean and maintain park maintenance equipment.
Assist in moving and installing park and recreation equipment such as bleachers, backstops, and playground equipment.
Assist and train less experienced personnel.
Respond to inquiries from the general public.
Control weeds.
May provide lead supervision to less experienced and temporary park maintenance employees.
Maintain swimming pools; clean filters and check water quality.
Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other city employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
Perform related duties as assigned.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Park Maintenance Worker I
Knowledge of:
Basic methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in park maintenance work.
Principles and practices of work safety.
Basic construction and repair methods.
Ability to:
On a continuous basis, know and understand operations, and observe safety rules. Intermittently analyze problem equipment; identify and locate equipment; interpret work orders; remember equipment location; and explain jobs to others.
Intermittently, sit while studying or preparing reports; bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist when performing installation of equipment; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation; lift or carry weight of 75 pounds or less.
Perform semi-skilled park maintenance work.
Learn to operate a variety of park maintenance mechanical equipment.
Learn to mix and apply herbicides and fertilizers.
Perform heavy manual labor.
Provide general assistance to the public.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Park Maintenance Worker II
In addition to the qualifications required for Park Maintenance Worker I:
Knowledge of:
Plant and turf pests and diseases and methods for their control and eradication.
Proper and effective use of landscape maintenance tools, equipment and materials.
Mechanics of irrigation and sprinkler systems.
Proper pruning methods.
Watering, fertilizing, and spraying of plants, turf, and trees.
Purposes and uses of a variety of equipment and tools used in park maintenance.
Safety precautions in the use and maintenance of power mowers and other equipment.
Ability to:
Perform semi-skilled and skilled park maintenance work, which may include installation of irrigation systems, play equipment, and park construction work.
Operate a variety of light and heavy equipment, including mowers.
Mix and apply herbicides and pesticides.
Competently care for plants, shrubs, turf, and trees; properly water, fertilize, and spray.
Read and interpret plans and diagrams.
Work independently and assume responsibility for an assigned area.
Keep records neatly and accurately.
Train less experienced personnel.
Perform light carpentry, plumbing, and painting work.
Experience and Training

Experience:
Two years of experience in park, pool, tree, or related maintenance work similar to a Parks Maintenance Worker I with the city of Davis.
Training:
Formal or informal education or training that ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
License or Certificate
Possession of a valid Class “C” California Driver’s License, to be maintained throughout employment.
Possession of, or successful acquisition within probationary period, a valid certification in American Red Cross CPR, First Aid and AED to be maintained throughout employment.
Possession of a validCalifornia State Pesticide Applicators Certificate, desirable.
Possession of a valid National Playground Inspector’s Certificate (NPSI) designation by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), desirable.
