Job Title: Junior Civil Engineer – Municipal and Transportation ProjectsJob DescriptionThis junior-level Civil Engineer role focuses on supporting municipal, local agency, and DOT-related infrastructure projects from the Waterford office. You will contribute to engineering design, construction documentation, and plan review for roads, utilities, and related civil works, while collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams in a highly respected architecture and engineering firm.
Responsibilities
- Perform engineering, construction, and design assignments for municipal and local agency projects in the Metro Detroit area.
- Support DOT-related projects as needed, particularly in roadway and transportation design.
- Prepare and maintain thorough documentation and reports for all construction project activities.
- Perform engineering analyses and design calculations required for assigned projects.
- Prepare sketches and diagrams for use by field technicians to support construction and inspection activities.
- Review and check drawings, layouts, and design documents for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with standards.
- Assist in the preparation of contract specifications, proposal documents, and construction cost estimates.
- Conduct daily plan reviews to ensure design quality and adherence to project requirements.
- Participate in grant permitting activities and support preparation of associated documentation.
- Review subcontractor shop drawing submittals for conformance with project plans and specifications.
- Assist in transportation engineering tasks within the municipal project sector, including roads, drives, and related facilities.
- Contribute to the design and coordination of utility-related projects, including water systems, sewer systems, and associated infrastructure.
- Collaborate with internal teams across engineering, architecture, construction management, and surveying disciplines to deliver integrated project solutions.
Essential Skills- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.
- At least 3 years of civil engineering experience working on municipal, local agency, and/or DOT projects.
- Proficiency with CAD software, such as AutoCAD, MicroStation OpenRoads Designer (ORD), and/or Civil 3D.
- Experience with municipal engineering projects, including coordination with local agencies and municipalities.
- Fundamental knowledge of roadway design principles and standards.
- Understanding of water system and sewer system design and analysis.
- Ability to prepare and review engineering drawings, layouts, and technical documents.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for preparing reports, documentation, and plan reviews.
- Ability to work onsite in the Waterford office five days per week.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a project-based environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus.
- Hands-on experience with Civil 3D is highly desirable.
- Experience with utility design and coordination, including water and sewer infrastructure.
- DOT roadway design experience, including familiarity with relevant standards and guidelines.
- Experience with soil testing and materials-related aspects of civil infrastructure projects.
- Exposure to construction management, surveying, right-of-way acquisition, or materials testing is beneficial.
- Ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams across multiple offices.
- Interest in long-term career growth within a stable and growing engineering and architecture environment.
Work EnvironmentThis role is based onsite in the Waterford office, working a standard schedule of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The office is part of a larger, multidisciplinary architecture and engineering organization with multiple offices across several states and a team-oriented culture. The Waterford office has approximately 31 employees, fostering a close-knit environment that encourages collaboration, knowledge sharing, and regular celebrations within the smaller office setting. You will work with modern CAD tools such as AutoCAD, MicroStation ORD, and Civil 3D, and collaborate with professionals across engineering, architecture, construction management, surveying, and materials testing disciplines. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Waterford, MI.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $35.00 - $50.00/hr.
