Job Title: Mechanical Engineer III – Maintenance Engineer

Function: Manufacturing / Maintenance Engineering


Job Summary

The Maintenance Engineer serves as a key technical resource supporting plant maintenance, skilled trades, and production teams. This role focuses on ensuring continuous operation of Detroit Axles production lines by resolving complex equipment failures, improving machine reliability, and driving preventive and predictive maintenance strategies. The engineer works closely with cross-functional teams and OEMs to support equipment upgrades, maintenance planning, and continuous improvement initiatives.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide daily plant floor support for reactive, preventive, and predictive maintenance activities in collaboration with skilled trades, production staff, and maintenance supervisors
  • Act as 2nd-level escalation support for critical equipment breakdowns and unscheduled machine stoppages
  • Lead analysis of maintenance KPIs to identify failure trends and drive corrective actions
  • Develop, manage, and optimize preventive maintenance plans and spare parts strategies within CMMS
  • Maintain and control technical documentation including machine prints, schematics, spare parts lists, and maintenance procedures
  • Coordinate with external vendors and OEMs for equipment repairs, upgrades, and spare parts procurement
  • Manage maintenance work orders and purchase requisitions in CMMS systems
  • Support equipment installation, commissioning, and production line launch readiness
  • Drive compliance with safety standards, regulatory requirements, and engineering best practices
  • Act as a technical coach and mentor for maintenance technicians and skilled trades teams
  • Lead or support retrofit, upgrade, and replacement projects including budget and timeline ownership
  • Contribute to Continuous Process Improvement (CPI) and long-term maintenance strategy development


Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Technology (or equivalent)


Preferred Experience & Skills

  • 5–7 years of experience in maintenance, manufacturing, facilities, or operational engineering roles
  • 2+ years of supervisory or technical leadership experience preferred
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and hands-on troubleshooting ability
  • Experience in automotive or heavy manufacturing environments preferred
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, materials, and equipment systems
  • Experience working with CMMS systems
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience with AutoCAD or similar engineering design tools
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills
