Materials Manager

About the RoleU-Haul is seeking a detail-oriented and driven Materials Manager to join our team. In this role, you will oversee all activities related to material planning and procurement to support on-time delivery, cost control, and high-quality manufacturing. Key Responsibilities- Lead and develop a team of buyers, planners, warehouse staff, and material handlers
- Establish and monitor KPIs for material availability, inventory accuracy, and supplier performance
- Promote a culture of accountability, safety, and continuous improvement
- Develop and manage material requirements planning (MRP) aligned with production schedules
- Forecast material needs based on customer demand, engineering changes, and capacity planning
- Coordinate cross-functionally with Production, Engineering, and Quality teams
- Monitor lead times and adjust planning parameters to avoid shortages or excess inventory
- Source and procure materials, including sheet metal (steel, stainless, aluminum), tubing, plate, hardware, and outsourced services
- Negotiate pricing, contracts, and delivery terms with suppliers
- Evaluate supplier performance (quality, delivery, and cost)
- Maintain relationships with mills, distributors, and specialty vendors
- Resolve material shortages and support engineering with new part setups and BOM validation
- Ensure accuracy of BOMs, item masters, and inventory transactions within SAP
- Generate reports on inventory, usage, scrap, and purchasing performance
- Drive continuous improvement in material flow, cost reduction, and system accuracy
Preferred Qualifications- Experience in sheet metal fabrication, welding, machining, or similar manufacturing environments
- Strong knowledge of metal types, gauges, tolerances, and fabrication processes
- Bachelor’s degree in supply chain, Operations, Business, or related field
- APICS/ASCM certification preferred
- Experience in high-mix, high-volume manufacturing
- Prior leadership experience (formal or informal)
- ERP experience required; SAP preferred
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office
- Knowledge of lean manufacturing, 5S, and material flow optimization
- Ability to read engineering drawings and Bills of Materials (BOMs)
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, negotiation, and communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor, and develop team members
- Excellent project management skills with the ability to work independently
Work EnvironmentThis role involves moderate risks requiring adherence to safety protocols, including working around machinery, moving parts, fumes, or chemicals. Use of protective equipment (e.g., gloves, goggles, masks) may be required.
Physical Demands- Extended periods of standing, walking, and working indoors/outdoors
- Ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs. (assisted or unassisted)
- Frequent movement, positioning, and tool usage
