Job Description

The Maintenance Mechanic Helper supports the maintenance team by assisting with preventive maintenance on production equipment, performing basic facility repairs, and helping to maintain a safe, clean, and compliant work environment. This role works closely with maintenance technicians and supervisors, learning hands-on skills while contributing to the reliability and safety of the facility.

Responsibilities

  • Assist maintenance technicians with preventive maintenance (PMs) on production equipment.
  • Support small maintenance projects, including installing or repairing safety guards, rails, signage, and barriers.
  • Hang signs, mirrors, floor markings, and other safety-related items throughout the facility.
  • Perform basic facility maintenance, such as painting walls, floors, equipment, and designated safety areas.
  • Complete minor repairs to hardware, fixtures, and shop items as directed.
  • Help keep maintenance areas organized, clean, and in compliance with OSHA and internal safety standards.
  • Work closely with maintenance technicians and supervisors to learn proper procedures and best practices.
  • Identify and promptly report potential safety hazards or maintenance issues to the appropriate personnel.
  • Follow all safety policies, procedures, and guidelines at all times, including proper use of tools and equipment.
  • Use hand tools and basic power tools safely and correctly to support repair and maintenance tasks.
  • Execute physically demanding tasks such as climbing, lifting, bending, and repetitive movements as needed for repairs and installations.
  • Participate in initial and ongoing training, including shadowing experienced team members and observing maintenance procedures.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors, both verbally and in writing, to ensure clear understanding of tasks and safety requirements.
  • Adhere to attendance and punctuality expectations, including arriving early for mandatory pre-shift meetings.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including a respirator when necessary, and follow all PPE protocols.

Essential Skills

  • High school diploma.
  • 3 to 6 months of related experience and/or training in maintenance, facilities, construction, general labor, or a similar field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Basic experience using hand tools and basic power tools in a safe and effective manner.
  • Knowledge of general preventive maintenance activities.
  • Ability to troubleshoot basic mechanical issues under guidance.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as blueprints, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to safely work in close proximity to others while performing repairs and installations.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Reliable, dependable, and team-oriented work approach.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work, including climbing, lifting objects, bending, standing for extended periods, and performing repetitive tasks.
  • Ability and willingness to wear required PPE, including a respirator.
  • Punctuality and excellent attendance.
  • Flexibility to work overtime, including weekends and/or holidays, if necessary.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Trade or technical school certification or equivalent is preferred.
  • Some prior experience in maintenance, facilities, construction, or general labor is preferred.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude is a plus.
  • Ability to learn and apply preventive maintenance and safety standards.
  • Bilingual skills are a plus.
  • Basic understanding or exposure to PLC troubleshooting is a plus.

Work Environment

This is a full-time, on-site role with a shift from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, including two breaks. Employees are expected to arrive approximately five minutes early for a mandatory 7:00 AM meeting at the start of each shift. The first three weeks typically involve intensive training, shadowing experienced technicians, and observing maintenance procedures, with the pace adjusted based on how quickly the individual learns the role. The position is physically demanding and involves tasks such as climbing, lifting, bending, and performing repetitive motions in a production and maintenance setting. The environment requires consistent use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including a respirator when needed, and strict adherence to safety and OSHA guidelines. Work is performed in and around production equipment, maintenance areas, and general facility spaces, using hand tools and basic power tools under established safety procedures.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Mansfield, MA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $25.00/hr.
