Maintenance and Construction Worker I

This position is responsible for assisting in the maintenance and repair of the sewer collection system. An incumbent in this position may be designated “Maintenance and Construction Worker II.”

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Assists in the installation and maintenance of sewer mains and lines; locates and repairs leaks.
  • Assists in the maintenance of the sewer right-of-way.
  • Installs sewer taps.
  • Distributes chemical agents into the sewer system to prevent blockages and ensure proper flow.
  • Sets manholes.
  • Installs traffic control devices at work sites.
  • Inspects and maintains assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs general landscaping duties at work sites.
  • Completes work orders.
  • Responds to customer complaints, questions, and concerns and resolves customer service issues.
  • Performs related duties.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
  • The work is typically outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, and irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of related maintenance duties. Inclement weather and field conditions contribute to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to participate in the repair and maintenance of the sewer system. Successful performance contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of system operations.


SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Sewer Collection Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.


GUIDELINES

Guidelines include safety guidelines and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
