Job Description

This role focuses on reading and interpreting blueprints to accurately lay out, align, and fit metal components for welding and assembly in a custom fabrication shop. The fitter prepares materials, ensures precise fit-up using measuring tools, and verifies that assemblies meet quality and dimensional standards.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret blueprints to determine layout, dimensions, and assembly requirements.
  • Lay out, align, and fit metal components prior to welding, ensuring correct position and orientation.
  • Use measuring tools such as tape measures, gauges, squares, and calipers to achieve precise fit-up.
  • Prepare materials for fabrication, including cutting, grinding, beveling, and cleaning surfaces.
  • Position, clamp, and secure parts to maintain accurate assembly during welding and fabrication.
  • Inspect fit-ups and completed assemblies to verify they meet quality, structural, and dimensional standards.
  • Collaborate with welders and other shop personnel to complete custom fabrication projects according to specifications.
  • Follow shop procedures and safety practices while working with fabrication tools and equipment.

Essential Skills

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and fabrication drawings, including passing a blueprint reading test.
  • Proven ability to perform fit-up work on steel components to a high standard of accuracy.
  • 3–5 years of experience in fitting and fabrication, including structural fitting.
  • Hands-on experience with MIG welding and working in a welding or fabrication environment.
  • Strong blueprint reading skills applied to structural and custom fabrication projects.
  • Proficiency using hand tools and measuring devices such as tape measures, gauges, squares, and calipers.
  • Experience in a custom weld shop or similar fabrication setting.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • TIG welding experience is a major plus but not required.
  • Experience working with flux core welding processes is beneficial.
  • Background in structural fabrication and assembly is an advantage.
  • Ability to work effectively with a variety of hand tools and fabrication equipment.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, accurate work.

Work Environment

This is a small custom fabrication and welding shop that produces work according to specific client needs. The role is on first shift, typically 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with minimal overtime. The facility is not climate controlled and can be dusty and loud at times due to fabrication and welding activities. You will work around common welding and fabrication equipment, hand tools, and measuring devices in a hands-on, production-focused environment.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Louisville, KY.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $26.00/hr.
