Job Title: Structural Fitter / Welder

Job Description

This role focuses on fitting and welding large structural steel assemblies used in building construction, including I-beams, trusses, handrails, and stairs. You interpret structural blueprints, gather materials, lay out and fit components, and perform MIG welding to meet precise specifications. The position involves extensive cutting, trimming, grinding, and fitting work in a large, open shop environment that uses overhead cranes and other heavy equipment to handle steel assemblies.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret structural steel blueprints and drawings, including weld symbols, to understand project requirements and specifications.
  • Select and gather required materials based on assigned prints and projects before fabrication work.
  • Lay out structural steel on fabrication tables according to blueprints, ensuring accurate measurements and alignment.
  • Fit, assemble, and tack large structural steel components such as I-beams, trusses, handrails, stairs, columns, and wide flange sections using flux core welding for tacking.
  • Perform MIG welding on structural steel assemblies, ensuring strong, clean, and structurally sound welds that meet quality standards.
  • Use overhead cranes and other lifting equipment to position and move large steel assemblies safely within the shop.
  • Operate cutting and preparation tools, including hand plasma torches and oxy-acetylene torches, to cut, trim, and prepare steel components.
  • Carry out extensive cutting, trimming, grinding, and finishing work to ensure assemblies meet dimensional and quality requirements.
  • Work closely with other fitters and welders on the floor to maintain efficient production flow and meet project deadlines.
  • Follow all safety procedures in the handling of structural steel, operation of cranes and lifts, and use of welding and cutting equipment.
  • Inspect completed welds and fitted assemblies for accuracy and quality, making adjustments or repairs as needed.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring tools, equipment, and materials are stored and used properly.

Essential Skills

  • At least 1 year of structural steel blueprint reading experience, including a solid understanding of weld symbols.
  • At least 1 year of structural fitting experience within the last 2 years, including laying out steel according to blueprints.
  • At least 1 year of structural steel welding experience using MIG within the last 2 years.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting structural steel drawings and blueprints.
  • Hands-on experience welding structural components such as wide flange sections, pipe, handrails, columns, and beams.
  • Ability to perform MIG welding on structural steel in a production or fabrication shop environment.
  • Experience using flux core welding for tacking structural assemblies prior to final welding.
  • Strong skills in cutting, trimming, grinding, and fitting steel assemblies to meet tight tolerances.
  • Ability to work safely with overhead cranes, lifts, and other material-handling equipment.
  • Knowledge of safe operation of hand plasma and oxy-acetylene torches for cutting and preparation work.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in structural steel fabrication or miscellaneous steel work in a shop environment.
  • Experience working on large structural projects such as building frames, trusses, and heavy assemblies.
  • Familiarity with production welding environments and working with a team to meet throughput goals.
  • Comfort working from detailed drawings provided by detailers and translating them into accurate layouts.
  • Experience with related fabrication work such as die rack builds, machine frames, and sheet metal welding (valuable experience but not a direct match for fitter responsibilities).
  • Strong attention to detail, with the ability to identify and correct fit-up or weld issues before final assembly.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision once trained on shop processes and standards.
