Electrical Designer – Substation

Design the Infrastructure Powering the Midwest’s Clean Energy Future

We’re looking for a motivated Electrical Designer – Substation to join our close‑knit, collaborative team. Our company supports a steady portfolio of utility and energy clients across the Midwest, delivering impactful projects in renewable energy, grid modernization, substations, and battery storage.

This is an exciting opportunity to work on greenfield substations for solar and wind farms while growing your technical skills in a supportive, family‑oriented environment. Our team operates in a flexible hybrid setting, with the option for remote work for designers who bring strong AutoCAD skills and a passion for quality design.

What You’ll Do
  • Perform physical 3D substation design using Inventor, including drawing sets, equipment layouts, and elevation/section views
  • Develop 2D substation layouts, schedules, and material tables using AutoCAD
  • Assist with steel weight checks and detailed design coordination
  • Collaborate closely with engineers, designers, and project managers in a team‑first environment
  • Communicate professionally with utility clients and coordinate directly with civil vendors via phone and email
  • Support renewable energy infrastructure, including solar, wind, battery storage, and transformer projects
  • Participate in a long‑term, contract‑to‑hire role focused on building real design expertise—not just redlines
What We’re Looking For
  • 2+ years of recent AutoCAD experience in a professional setting
  • Strong interest in substation and power delivery design
  • Willingness to learn and grow in Inventor (3D)
  • Ability to work collaboratively while also taking ownership of your design tasks
  • Clear communication skills and a detail‑oriented mindset
Preferred Experience (Nice to Have)
  • Exposure to substations, renewables (solar/wind), power delivery, or battery storage
  • Experience with both 3D and 2D design workflows
  • Familiarity with iLogic and electrical schematics
  • Drafting or design‑related degree
  • Experience with MicroStation, Civil 3D, or Inventor
Why You’ll Like Working Here
  • Small, family‑style culture where your work is seen and valued
  • Stable client base across the Midwest—no constant chasing of work
  • Projects that support renewable energy, reliable power, and grid modernization
  • Hands‑on learning and mentorship to help you grow beyond drafting
  • Flexible work environment with hybrid and remote opportunities
