About the Opportunity
A well-established, multi-site consumer services organization with over 2,000 locations nationwide is seeking a Director of IT Infrastructure to lead and scale its infrastructure and systems engineering function. This is a leadership role at the center of a meaningful technology evolution—one where the right person will define how the environment is built, supported, and improved going forward.
The organization operates at significant scale across physical locations, which creates a genuinely complex infrastructure challenge: consistency, reliability, and speed of support across a highly distributed footprint. The Director will own that challenge and have the authority to drive real change.
What You’ll Be Doing
This is not a purely technical role—it’s a leadership position that requires both infrastructure depth and operational discipline. Day-to-day, you’ll be responsible for:
- Leading and mentoring a team of approximately 10 systems administrators and engineers, setting priorities, managing workload, and developing talent
- Owning service delivery across the infrastructure environment—defining SLAs, holding the team to them, and ensuring escalations are handled with urgency and structure
- Serving as the escalation point for critical infrastructure issues—when something goes wrong with SQL Server, networking, or endpoint environments, you’re the person who gets everyone in the room and drives resolution
- Partnering closely with engineering teams on infrastructure build-out and technology lifecycle planning—identifying what needs to be improved, replaced, or retired
- Reviewing processes and metrics with a critical eye—understanding how things are currently done and determining where there’s opportunity to do them differently
- Supporting end-user environments across corporate and field locations—including warehouses and distributed sites—in partnership with service desk leadership
- Driving infrastructure roadmap conversations and building the case for investment when the environment calls for it
- Understanding the scale implications of changes across 2,000+ locations before they happen—coordinating across departments and building in the right feedback loops
What You Bring
The right person for this role has a broad, deep infrastructure background and knows how to lead people through complexity without losing sight of execution. Specifically:
- Proven experience leading infrastructure or systems engineering teams in a distributed, high-volume operational environment—retail, field services, logistics, or similar
- Hands-on background with Microsoft Hyper-V, Microsoft Azure, VPN infrastructure, thin clients, Terminal Services / VDI—you don’t need to be doing it daily, but you need to speak to it credibly
- Experience defining and enforcing SLAs, building escalation frameworks, and holding teams accountable to service delivery standards
- Comfort operating as both a strategic thinker and a grounded operator—someone who can look at process gaps and drive solutions without needing to be told where to look
- Strong collaboration skills—this role works closely with engineering, service desk, project management, and field operations teams
- Experience navigating scale: understanding what it means when a change touches thousands of endpoints or network devices across hundreds of locations
- A track record of growing and retaining technical talent—this team needs a leader, not just a manager
