Attracting and retaining residents is a key function of the position and is critical to the success of this dynamic and diverse City. The Director will develop and manage strategies across various communications and marketing platforms to achieve the City’s goals.

As the City’s Public Information Officer, the Director leads crisis communications, often handling subjects that are sensitive and controversial, and sometimes in conjunction with the Police Department’s PIO. The Director communicates on behalf of the Mayor and manages media inquiries and responses.

The Director oversees the production of a quarterly print magazine and manages a multi-layered marketing campaign that includes digital and print media, ad placements and media buys both within NEO and in key markets nationwide.

The Director serves as a member of a talented and dedicated Management Team, reports to the Mayor and the Chief Administrative Officer, supervises a staff of three, and oversees a budget of nearly $1M.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a thorough knowledge of current communications and marketing strategies and platforms, especially within the context of government and public sector work. This requires experience and comfort with social media, electronic communications, and websites, and a willingness to stay current with evolving platforms and technology.

Leadership experience, demonstrated confidence and skill as a writer, media relations experience, a deep and demonstrated understanding of the history of Shaker Heights and its current initiatives, and a commitment to respectfulness, fairness and professionalism as it relates to all operations and work products are essential.
