Chief Financial Officer (CFO) – Nonprofit Healthcare Organization

Position Overview

My client is seeking an experienced Chief Financial Officer to lead the financial strategy, stewardship, and operational performance of a mission-driven nonprofit healthcare organization. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the CFO will oversee all financial functions, ensure strong fiscal discipline, and support the organization’s ability to deliver high-quality, accessible care in a complex and regulated environment.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Leadership & Strategy

  • Serve as a key member of the executive leadership team, contributing to organizational strategy and long-term planning
  • Lead the development of financial strategy aligned with the organization’s mission, growth objectives, and community impact goals
  • Provide financial insight and scenario modeling to support decision-making across clinical, operational, and administrative areas

Accounting, Reporting & Compliance

  • Oversee all accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, and forecasting functions
  • Ensure accuracy and integrity of financial statements in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
  • Maintain compliance with regulatory, grant, and reporting requirements, including federal, state, and local guidelines
  • Direct month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes

Budgeting & Financial Planning

  • Lead annual budgeting process and ongoing financial forecasting
  • Partner with clinical and operational leaders to align resource allocation with strategic priorities
  • Monitor financial performance and identify opportunities for cost optimization and efficiency improvements

Revenue Cycle & Operational Finance

  • Oversee revenue cycle management, including billing, collections, reimbursement, and payer relationships
  • Ensure optimization of reimbursement processes across Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payers
  • Support initiatives to improve cash flow, reduce denials, and strengthen revenue integrity

Treasury, Capital & Risk Management

  • Manage cash flow, liquidity planning, and investment of organizational funds
  • Oversee debt management, capital structure, and financing strategies as needed
  • Ensure appropriate risk management practices and financial controls are in place

Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead and develop a high-performing finance organization across accounting, revenue cycle, budgeting, and financial planning functions
  • Build a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement
  • Partner with department leaders to enhance financial literacy and accountability across the organization

Board & External Relations

  • Present financial results, forecasts, and strategic updates to the Board of Directors and finance committee
  • Act as primary liaison to external auditors, banking partners, regulators, and funding agencies
  • Support grant reporting and philanthropic funding compliance requirements

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (MBA, MHA, or CPA strongly preferred)
  • 10–15+ years of progressive financial leadership experience
  • Prior experience as CFO, Deputy CFO, or senior finance executive in healthcare or nonprofit organizations
  • Strong understanding of healthcare finance, reimbursement systems, and regulatory frameworks
  • Experience managing complex budgets in a multi-site or multi-entity environment
  • Demonstrated success leading finance teams and organizational transformation initiatives
  • Strong communication skills with ability to engage board-level stakeholders

Preferred Experience

  • Nonprofit healthcare system, hospital, or integrated delivery network experience
  • Exposure to value-based care models, payer contracting, or revenue cycle transformation
  • Experience leading ERP or financial system implementations
  • Track record of improving financial performance while supporting mission-driven outcomes
