The organization partners with major municipal and commercial customers in some of the fastest-growing cities nationwide. Their mission is centered on keeping valuable materials in circulation while reducing the environmental and economic impact of landfills.


About the Role:

Our client is seeking an Assistant General Counsel to support the continued build-out of its legal department. This individual will partner closely with facility leadership and cross-functional teams on a wide range of commercial, regulatory, and operational legal matters.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on corporate generalist with experience supporting industrial, manufacturing, or services-based organizations—preferably within recycling, organics, or material management industries.

This role is based in Austin, Texas, and will require occasional travel to operating locations.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee day-to-day legal matters across multiple U.S. facilities, including:
  • RFPs, contract drafting and negotiation, and development of playbooks and templates (government, vendor, customer, transportation, NDAs, financing, HR, and technology)
  • Health, Safety & Environmental (HS&E) compliance, including OSHA and state/local regulatory agencies
  • M&A activity and integration efforts
  • Corporate governance, policies, and compliance initiatives
  • Risk mitigation, training, and regulatory matters
  • Real estate, intellectual property, cybersecurity, privacy, labor & employment, insurance, procurement, communications, and dispute resolution
  • Collaborate with the Chief Legal Officer, executive leadership, and internal teams to identify and mitigate legal risks while developing practical, business-aligned solutions
  • Represent the company before state and federal regulatory agencies and related organizations
  • Monitor and advise on changes in laws and regulations impacting the business
  • Manage outside counsel across specialized areas, ensuring effective and cost-efficient legal support


Minimum Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience as a licensed attorney
  • Experience supporting the legal and business needs of an industrial, manufacturing, or services-based organization
  • Demonstrated success managing complex transactions and contractual agreements
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills
  • High level of integrity and professionalism
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Strategic mindset with a focus on driving business outcomes
  • Experience with CLM systems (e.g., Ironclad) and Microsoft Office tools
  • J.D. from an accredited law school and licensed to practice in Texas (additional bar admissions a plus)


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in waste, recycling, or organics industries
  • Background in corporate or commercial transactions
  • Combination of in-house and top-tier law firm experience
  • Experience contracting with municipalities or similar entities
  • Experience building or supporting a legal function in a high-growth, startup, or private equity-backed environment
