About us:
The City of Burlington's Transportation Department is responsible for overseeing Traffic Engineering, Computerized Signals, Traffic Signal Maintenance, Traffic Signs and Markings and Link Transit.

What you will do:
This position involves performing manual labor to install and replace City signage and markings on roadways and buildings. The employee leads less experienced staff in tasks such as placing barricades for events, installing thermoplastic markings, and operating trucks and hand tools. Responsibilities include installing new metal and fabric signs for traffic control, buildings, and fabricating new signs, including regulatory, warning, and safety signs. The employee also learns basic traffic signal troubleshooting and works an on-call schedule to address field-related signal issues.Signage and Post Maintenance:
  • Cleans, straightens, and installs or removes City signage and sign posts
  • Removes sight obstructions like tree limbs from intersections
Sign Fabrication:
  • Uses computer software, plotters, and tools to design and create custom signage
Material Handling:
  • Loads materials such as sign posts, street name plates, bolts, nuts, and necessary fluids onto the truck
Equipment Operation:
  • Operates truck, thermoplastic and painting equipment, hand tools, post drivers, and hydraulic post pullers for efficient sign and marking installation
Work Zone Safety:
  • Places barricades, cones, and safety devices around work zones; holds warning flags during work operations
Traffic Markings and Painting:
  • Applies traffic paint for double yellow lines, arrows, stop bars, curbs, parking stalls, and railroad crossings
  • Operates small striping machine and measures for thermoplastic applications
Sign Installation and Supervision:
  • Installs various signs including regulatory, warning, guide, construction, detour, and special signs
  • Assigns tasks and trains less senior personnel on specific duties
Sign Inventory and Reporting:
  • Uses laptop software for field sign inventory management
Additional Duties:
  • Performs related duties as required
Availability:
  • Available for 24 hour on-call status and able to respond to emergencies
Traffic Control and Safety Knowledge:
  • Strong understanding of the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and principles of signage and pavement markings
  • Knowledge of work zone safety precautions to ensure a secure environment during operations
Supervisory and Leadership Skills:
  • Familiarity with basic supervisory principles to oversee the work of less experienced personnel, ensuring compliance with standards
  • Ability to make decisions and handle emergency situations, while guiding subordinates effectively
Equipment Operation:
  • Skilled in operating a variety of equipment including paint machines, thermoplastic tools, post drivers, air compressors, forklifts, small striping machines, and hand tools
  • Proficient with tools such as a letter-making machine, paint mixers, and carpentry tools
Maintenance and Reporting:
  • Ability to identify maintenance issues with signs and markings and communicate necessary repairs to a supervisor
  • Understand and follow engineering blueprints to execute tasks accurately
Problem Solving and Decision Making:
  • Ability to set work priorities, resolve issues, and maintain quality standards for ongoing projects
Relationship Building:
  • Strong communication skills to establish and maintain effective relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and the general public
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency and considerable work experience in the installation and maintenance of traffic signs and markings, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid North Carolina Driver’s License
Preferred Qualification:
  • Certification as IMSA Sign and Pavement Marking Level II (International Municipal Signal Association)
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Work in this class is described as medium and frequently requires physical exertion to complete tasks and move objects.
  • Work typically involves the ability to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.
  • This employee must have visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned and to perform mechanical or skilled trades’ tasks of a non-repetitive nature.
  • Employee is subject to hazards, including noise, vibration, oils, physical conditions such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, or exposure to chemicals, atmospheric conditions due to exposure to fumes, odors, and dusts.
  • Working conditions include both inside and outside environmental conditions.
