Signs and Markings Technician

TheTraffic Signs & Markings Technician installs, repairs and replaces all street signs, markings, and indicators for the City of Victoria


  • Designs and fabricates all signage according to Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) guidelines using various software; prepares fabricated signs and gathers material for installation.
  • Installs slip bases, sleeves, and other parts needed for signage; operates various equipment to include hand tools, augers, and mini bobcats as needed.
  • Inspects, installs, repairs, or replaces all end of street type 3 barricades; inspects signs and markings and repairs or replaces damaged, outdated, and faded signage and markings.
  • Maintains all stop bars, crosswalks, and curb markings; installs markings in new locations as requested; paints stripes in City parking lots.
  • Designs special signs upon request; maintains a sign inventory database; creates identification barcodes for each sign and enters data into database for tracking.
  • Prepare reports accurately and timely.
  • Performs related duties as required or assigned.
Work is performed in a shop environment and outdoors throughout the City. Requires exposure to inclement weather conditions, traffic hazards, dangerous tools, equipment, and machinery, hazardous chemicals, and electrical hazards.Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent AND two (2) years of related experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Valid Driver License
  • Class B Commercial driver’s license with Airbrake endorsement or obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • Signs and Markings Level I certification within one (1) year of hire.
  • Signs and Markings Level II certification within three (3) years of hire.
  • Relevant laws, regulations, safety practices, and MUTCD guidelines.
  • Graphic design software used to create signage.
  • Use of tools, equipment, and methods used in sign fabrication, installation, and maintenance.
  • Reading and interpreting blueprints and schematics.
  • Work organization, prioritization, and deadline management.
  • Effective communication and professional interaction with others.
