Traffic Signal Technician

The City is seeking a motivated and dependable Traffic Signal Technician to join our Traffic Division. This position plays a key role in maintaining and improving the safety and efficiency of our roadway system through the installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signals, signs, and related infrastructure.

Perform skilled and semiskilled work related to the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of traffic signal devices and related systems.

1. Perform a variety of signal maintenance and repair tasks such as replacing signal lamps, visors, lenses, back-shield LED modules, and pedestrian push buttons; realign turned signal heads; and replace damaged signal heads, bracketing, and poles when necessary. Document activities through work orders and/or mobile GPS device.

2. Troubleshoot malfunctioning electronic signal systems, including controllers, master controllers, detection systems, and communication systems. Repair fiber-optic cable and related equipment, EVP systems, battery backup systems, solar flasher systems, and related hardware.

3. Install signal equipment, including traffic signal cabinets and controllers and various other related traffic signal equipment. Program complex microprocessor controllers as needed. Terminate fiber and copper communications cable.

4. Locate and mark various traffic signal underground facilities for the Information Technology Division, locate and mark permanent traffic counter station detectors, and monitor and maintain One Call tickets for utility marking activities. Verify electronic maps and document corrections for changes as necessary.

5. Provide power to intersections with portable power equipment during power outages. Adjust and modify electronic control device programs via laptop computer using various proprietary software applications.

6. Install, repair, replace, and remove traffic control signs, markers, and barricades, traffic sign posts, and street name signs. Set up temporary signing and barricading for detour routes as assigned.

7. Operate and maintain various types of equipment, including pickup trucks, bucket trucks, hydraulic post drivers and pullers, and various sophisticated electronic and computer equipment in the installation and maintenance of traffic control systems.

8. Perform snow and ice control and removal procedures, including plowing, sanding, spreading deicing chemicals, loading trucks, hauling snow, or shoveling sidewalks, or assisting mechanics in the maintenance of snow removal equipment.

9. May oversee and document activities through work orders and/or mobile GPS device. Provide instruction to newly hired technicians, including temporary employees as assigned by leadership. Complete required online training. May also act as Traffic Devices Maintenance Supervisor as assigned in the absence of the supervisor.

10. Perform other such duties and functions as are necessary or incidental to the proper performance of this position.


Graduation from high school or GED certification supplemented by two-year trade school, including course work in electrical theory and electronics, and two (2) years’ experience in the installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic control devices; or any such combination of education, experience, and training as may be acceptable to the hiring authority.

Certifications by IMSA in Fiber Optics for ITS Field Technician Level II, and ETA certification as Fiber Optics Technician—Outside Plant are desirable.

Must possess or be able to obtain within 90 days of hire a valid Class B commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement.

  • Knowledge of electronics, including digital and microprocessor theory.

  • Knowledge of audio, radio, and fiber-optic communications.

  • Knowledge of the principles of electrical theory.

  • Knowledge of video detection systems.

  • Knowledge of various software applications, including Microsoft products and proprietary traffic control device software applications.

  • Knowledge of the use and care of hand tools and electronic test equipment.

  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of light equipment used in the installation and repair of traffic control devices.

  • Knowledge of the procedures used in installing and repairing traffic signs, signal system devices, and markings.

  • Willing to work standby and extended hours in variable weather conditions when required.

  • Knowledge of the requirements of the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.

  • Ability to read and interpret electronic schematics and manuals.

  • Ability to work at heights up to 50 feet and with live power.

  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair microprocessor-based traffic control systems.

  • Ability to write reports and understand written and oral work orders.

  • Ability to record and maintain written work records.
