Sustainability Assistant Internship - Sustainability

Student Interns in the Office of Campus Sustainability will support a variety of projects, initiatives, programs, and activities aimed at advancing both the immediate and long-term goals of the office, as well as promoting overall sustainability at BGSU.

The Student Interns in the Office of Campus Sustainability operate under the umbrella of Campus Services and report directly to the Sustainability Coordinator. It is a paid internship and may also be eligible for academic credit pending approval and arrangements between the intern and their academic department.

  • Acting as assistant to Sustainability Coordinator in connection with various energy and waste reduction tasks resulting from the Climate Action Plan goal of carbon neutrality. These include serving the everyday needs of the BGSU community, and tracking and reporting data in various platforms
  • Monitoring, enhancing, updating, and keeping current the Office of Campus Sustainability website and links to reflect current status of the office and sustainability opportunities and accomplishments across campus; in this capacity the intern may be interacting with the Office of Marketing & Brand Strategy on a regular basis to obtain exchange info
  • Assisting in a variety of other projects to further the marketing, information-sharing and promotion of the Office of Campus Sustainability, including maintaining/enhancing sustainability displays and presentations at various preview days and other events
  • Working/coordinating with other sustainability interns (in the areas of BGreen Events, Green Office program, move-in and/or WYMO, Campus Sustainability Month, Earth Month, etc...) to enhance those programs and promote them to students at BGSU
  • Coordinating/facilitating sustainability related service opportunities and activities utilizing the BGSUServes platform
  • Coordinating/interacting with student organization efforts in sustainability across campus, including drafting proposals to the Student Green Initiatives Fund, activities/initiatives proposed by groups such as residence hall councils, USG, and other organizations
  • Promotion of waste reduction and recycling education campaigns, such as Campus Race to Zero Waste and designing/revising/posting various social media posts and event flyers; experience or willingness to learn Excel, Canva and Social Media platforms are helpful as interns engage with multiple software and video platforms
  • Periodically attending and participating in meetings with other students, staff, and/or administrators
  • Other duties and responsibilities as they arise
  • May occasionally work outside normal business hours
  • Sustainability experience through related coursework, previous job or internships, or volunteering is highly preferred.
  • An understanding of the basic concepts of the pillars of sustainability and BGSU's Climate Action Plan goals is required.
  • Must have a strong interest and passion for sustainability and environmental initiatives.
  • Must have knowledge and experience using social media to market and promote events, sustainability initiatives and concepts.
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of web design and management is preferred, with a willingness to achieve Adobe CMS certification for BSGU webpage editing.
  • Preference for knowledge of and experience in creating marketing materials using Canva or other such software used for presentations, digital slides, flyers, and infographics for digital media and print.
  • Must have professional written and oral communication skills.
  • Must have a willingness to learn and collaborate with the sustainability team in a professional setting.
  • Availability of at least 15 hours per week per semester worked during business hours is required.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and be insurable by BGSU.

  • This is a paid internship. Position will begin late August and run throughout the academic year.
  • There is the potential for summer employment as well. Ideally, interns for fall semester will start in May and work over the summer.
