SUMMARY

The Surgical Technology Program Director is a faculty leader responsible for the coordination, quality, and long-term development of the Surgical Technology program. Similar to a charge nurse overseeing a clinical unit, this role supports faculty, manages academic operations, and ensures students experience consistent, high-quality learning across classroom, laboratory, clinical, and simulation settings.

The Director provides leadership in curriculum planning, teaching and learning practices, assessment, student progression, and faculty support, with a strong focus on program excellence, responsiveness, and continuous improvement. This is a faculty position that includes teaching responsibilities. Instruction may occur in face-to-face, hybrid, or online formats and may include evening or weekend assignments.

The Director also provides leadership in clinical education by supporting the recruitment, evaluation, and development of clinical sites; coordinating expectations with clinical partners; and assisting in the training and support of clinical faculty and preceptors.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESinclude the following. Other duties may be assigned.


Program Leadership & Coordination

  • Provide day-to-day leadership for faculty, students, and program operations.
    • Serve as the central point of coordination similar to a charge nurse—ensuring effective communication, consistency, and workflow across the program.
    • Lead program planning, scheduling, and coordination of classroom, lab, simulation, and clinical activities.
    • Collaborate with faculty to support academic quality, consistency, and adherence to program policies.
    • Maintain ongoing communication with the Dean regarding program needs, challenges, and strategic opportunities.


Teaching, Curriculum, & Assessment

  • Lead curriculum development, revision, and alignment with program outcomes and workforce expectations.
  • Support faculty in delivering consistent, evidence-based instruction across all modalities.
  • Oversee exam readiness strategies including exam blueprinting, item analysis, and use of data to refine assessment practices.
  • Ensure instructional materials, syllabi, and course structure meet institutional and program standards.
  • Promote cohesive teaching practices among full-time and adjunct faculty.

Simulation Leadership

  • Serve as the program’s primary faculty lead for simulation design, delivery, and evaluation.
  • Develop and refine simulation scenarios, performance-based assessments, and structured debriefing practices.
  • Collaborate with the Simulation Center team to coordinate access, scheduling, equipment needs, and safety standards.
  • Support integration of simulation across all semesters and learning outcomes.
  • Contribute to broader institutional simulation initiatives across health sciences programs.

Student Success, Progression, & Remediation

  • Provide leadership in student progression monitoring and academic support planning.
  • Oversee a structured remediation system integrating simulation, clinical reasoning, and exam-readiness strategies.
  • Support the creation of individualized remediation plans informed by faculty feedback and student performance data.
  • Serve as an accessible resource for students with academic or progression concerns.
  • Collaborate with Student Services, Disability Services, and clinical partners to support equitable learning experiences.

Program Evaluation & Accreditation Support

  • Lead systematic program review processes, including data collection, analysis, and documentation.
  • Maintain program-level records, reports, and evidence required for accreditation and institutional review.
  • Monitor trends in retention, graduation, NCLEX outcomes, and job placement, reporting findings to Academic Leadership and faculty.
  • Prepare annual updates, self-study materials, and other documents required for accreditation and regulatory compliance.
  • Ensure program practices support a culture of continuous improvement.

Faculty Support & Development

  • Support onboarding and mentoring of full-time and adjunct faculty.
  • Provide leadership in faculty development related to simulation, teaching strategies, and assessment.
  • Facilitate regular faculty meetings involving curriculum, student progression, assessment practices, and operational planning.

Budget Oversight & Resource Management

  • Manage program budget, including planning, monitoring expenditures, and resource allocation.
  • Forecast financial needs related to instruction, simulation equipment, supplies, and technology.
  • Collaborate with the Dean on long-term resource planning and grant-supported opportunities.
  • Ensure efficient and responsible use of institutional resources.

Partnerships, Communication, & External Relations

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for clinical partners and community agencies.
  • Coordinate clinical placement needs and maintain collaborative relationships with healthcare partners.
  • Participate in recruitment events, advisory meetings, and community outreach to support program visibility and workforce alignment.
  • Represent the program at regional and professional meetings.

Internal:Students, faculty, staff, and administrators


External:Hospitals, clinics, secondary and post-secondary partners, and various agencies including governmental and accrediting bodies.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience

  • Be a graduate of an education program in surgical technology accredited by a nationally recognized programmatic accreditation agency; and
  • Possess a bachelor's degree and a credential in the field of surgical technology through a national certification program that is accredited by the National Commission on Certifying Agencies (NCCA); and
    • Have a minimum total of five years (5) of experience, either in the operating room scrub role or as an instructor in surgical technology, or a combination of both, within the past ten years
    • Documentation of experience and a certificate/degree in online teaching and learning or completion of a certificate in online teaching and learning within one (1) year of hire.


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Certified Surgical Technologists (CST)
  • Documentation of a certificate in online teaching and learning or completion of a certificate in online teaching and learning within one (1) year of hire

Working knowledge and skills in Microsoft Office applications.

Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Effectively present information and respond to questions from the faculty, staff, students and the general public.


Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.


Reasoning Ability

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
