Substation Engineer

Purpose: Provide engineering and technical support to Project Engineers and other personnel in the design and construction of electrical substations.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering (Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical) from an ABET accredited college or university
  • Up to 2 years experience in the design and construction of electrical substations
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Thorough understanding of word processing, spreadsheets, and computer applications in general
  • Engineer-In-Training Certificate is desirable
  • Any equivalent combination of related education, training, and/or experience can be substituted for requirements listed above.

ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide technical support to Project Engineers by preparing technical specifications, drawings and related documents for review by the Project Engineer
  • Assist Project Engineers with the preparation of project cost estimates
  • Assist Project Engineers with the preparation of project schedules
  • Assist Project Engineers with review of equipment supplier and contractor approval submittals
  • Assist Project Engineers and Engineering Technicians with monitoring the installation of substation equipment by outside contractors and Cooperative personnel
  • Provide as-built documentation of completed installation of substation equipment for review by Project Engineers
  • Assist Project Engineers and Engineering Coordinator with preparation of contract and project closeout documentation
  • Provide technical assistance to Transmission System Operation and Maintenance staff by preparing verbal and/or written technical answers to problems and questions
  • Assist Planning Engineers with preparing planning studies and fault analyses
  • Provide technical review of system additions proposed by Planning Division from both design and constructability viewpoints
  • Assist Project Engineers with evaluation of equipment and construction bids
  • Any equivalent combination of related education, training, and/or experience can be substituted for requirements listed above.
  • Assist in development of switching procedures.
  • Assist in facilitating Pre-Bid and Pre-Construction meetings.
  • Protect AEPCO interests by being owners on-site field representative during the execution of construction contracts.
  • Inspect owner furnished material to ensure compliance with procurement specifications.
  • Assist with design and manufacturer's shop drawing review for constructability issues.
  • Coordinate all field activities during the course of design and construction, including Technical Service and Maintenance support.
  • Help develop substation physical layouts, plot plans, equipment plans, material lists, elevations, foundation plans, conduit, grounding plans, transmission plan and profile drawings.
  • Support Project Engineers with efforts towards ensuring the quality and control of submittals from contractors and consultant for engineering, purchasing, drafting, land services and corporate records.
  • Assist in construction supervision.
