Skills Required
Primary (Must-Have):
• 10+ years of Structural Steel Detailing experience
• Advanced proficiency with AutoCAD
• Experience creating structural steel fabrication and construction drawings
• Experience detailing commercial and industrial steel structures, stairs, and handrails
• Experience as a Structural Steel Detailer and Checker
• Experience working directly with steel fabrication shops and resolving fabrication issues
• Knowledge of structural steel and reinforced concrete design
• Experience using 3D modeling software such as SDS/2, Tekla, or similar platforms
• Working knowledge of AISC, ASCE, and ACI design codes
• Working knowledge of AWS welding standards
• Knowledge of OSHA requirements related to steel design and construction
• Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills
• Ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities
Secondary (Good to Have):
• Experience creating Substation Design drawings
• Experience supporting Transmission Line Design projects
• Experience analyzing structural steel connections
• Experience designing transmission structures
• Two-year Technical Degree or Engineering Technology Degree preferred
• Experience mentoring junior designers and drafters
• Knowledge of utility, power generation, or transmission and distribution environments
Position Overview:
The Structural Designer will support the Transmission and Distribution Substation Design Group while also providing assistance to the Transmission Line Design Group. This role is responsible for producing engineering drawings, material requirements, structural steel details, and concrete foundation designs while ensuring quality, safety, schedule adherence, and cost efficiency. The ideal candidate will possess extensive structural detailing experience, advanced AutoCAD skills, and strong knowledge of structural design standards and industry codes.
Roles & Responsibilities
• Develop engineering drawings, specifications, and material requirements for structural steel and concrete foundations
• Prepare detailed structural steel fabrication and construction drawings
• Support Transmission and Distribution Substation Design projects
• Provide structural design support for Transmission Line projects as needed
• Create and maintain structural models using AutoCAD and 3D design software
• Review and check structural detailing packages for quality and accuracy
• Coordinate with steel fabrication shops to address fabrication questions and technical issues
• Analyze structural steel connections and recommend design improvements
• Assist with reinforced concrete design and foundation detailing
• Ensure compliance with AISC, ASCE, ACI, AWS, and OSHA standards
• Coordinate multiple projects while maintaining schedule and quality expectations
• Manage drafting workloads and provide technical guidance to junior team members
• Participate in field meetings and site visits as required
• Communicate technical concepts effectively to internal teams and stakeholders
• Support continuous improvement and engineering best practices
Minimum Qualifications
• High School Diploma or equivalent required
• AutoCAD Certification, Training, or demonstrated advanced AutoCAD experience
• 10+ years of Structural Steel Detailing experience
• Experience using AutoCAD at an advanced level
• Experience with structural steel fabrication drawings and detailing
• Knowledge of structural design codes and industry standards
• Experience using 3D modeling software such as SDS/2, Tekla, or equivalent
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously
Preferred Qualifications
• Associate Degree in Drafting, Engineering Technology, Structural Design, or related field
• Experience creating Substation Design drawings
• Experience supporting Transmission Line Design projects
• Experience with reinforced concrete design
• Experience analyzing steel connections
• Experience working within utility, transmission, or power generation industries
• Strong mentoring and leadership experience
• Demonstrated ability to build strong working relationships with internal and externa stakeholders
