Senior / Staff Steam Turbine Engineer

Location: Richmond, VA (Relocation support available)

Work Model: Office + power station support with travel

About the Role

We are seeking a Senior or Staff Steam Turbine Engineer to support a non-nuclear power generation fleet.

This position is built for an engineering expert in steam turbines — someone who understands the machine beyond operation, with hands-on experience in disassembly, inspection, reassembly, and internal component evaluation.

You will serve as a technical authority across multiple power stations, supporting outage execution, maintenance strategy, and complex technical troubleshooting.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead and support steam turbine outages, including disassembly, inspection, and reassembly activities
  • Perform detailed internal assessments of turbine components (rotors, diaphragms, seals, bearings, etc.)
  • Evaluate clearances, tolerances, and mechanical integrity of turbine systems
  • Lead root cause analysis for failures, repeat issues, and performance degradation
  • Provide real-time engineering support during planned and forced outages
  • Recommend repair vs. replace vs. run decisions based on technical and risk-based analysis
  • Develop and implement long-term maintenance and reliability strategies
  • Analyze performance data including vibration, thermal behavior, and operational trends
  • Oversee vendor work, repair shop activities, and quality inspections
  • Partner with plant teams, outage planners, and project managers to drive execution

Required Qualifications

Senior Engineer

  • 5+ years of experience supporting steam turbine maintenance and engineering in a power generation environment
  • Hands-on experience with turbine teardown, inspection, and rebuild activities

Staff Engineer

  • 8+ years of progressive experience with steam turbine engineering and outage leadership
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical decisions and mentor other engineers

For Both Levels

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering
  • Strong understanding of steam turbine internal components, clearances, and design/functionality
  • Experience applying engineering judgment to mechanical failures and performance issues
  • Familiarity with ASME PTC 6 and turbine repair methodologies (machining, welding, NDE)
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally

Target Background (Highly Preferred)

  • Prior experience as a Field Engineer or Technical Advisor (TA) supporting steam turbines for OEMs such as:
  • GE
  • Siemens
  • Mitsubishi
  • Alstom
  • Experience supporting major outages involving full turbine disassembly and reassembly
  • Deep understanding of turbine internals, design limitations, and failure modes

Work Environment

  • ~60% office / 40% plant-based work
  • Up to 40% travel (higher during outage seasons)
  • Exposure to industrial plant conditions including heat, noise, and confined spaces
  • Occasional nights/weekends/holidays during outages

Why This Role Matters

This role has a direct impact on plant reliability, equipment life, and safe power generation.

Your engineering decisions will influence major operational and financial outcomes across the fleet.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary: $90,000 – $163,000 (depending on experience and level)
  • Relocation assistance available
  • Medical, dental, vision insurance
  • 401(k)
  • Travel expenses covered
  • Additional employer-provided benefits
