Location: Minneapolis or Atlanta (hybrid)

This position is related to power generation and energy infrastructure projects, including gas-fired power plants, combined cycle facilities, renewable generation support systems, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and associated industrial facilities. The role supports U.S. projects and requires solid experience in mechanical systems design for power and energy facilities.

Primary Responsibilities

The Mechanical Engineer – Power Generation Facilities will be responsible for the engineering and design of mechanical systems and process equipment associated with power generation plants across all project phases, from conceptual studies through IFC packages and construction support. The position has a strong focus on equipment selection, process documentation, and coordination with multidisciplinary teams.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Develop and review mechanical designs for power generation facilities, including gas turbine, reciprocating engines, combined cycle, renewables and balance-of-plant systems.
  • Prepare and review Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) for power plant systems such as fuel gas, cooling water, steam, condensate, compressed air, lube oil, and auxiliary systems.
  • Perform and validate heat and mass balance calculations for power generation cycles and auxiliary systems.
  • Equipment sizing, technical evaluation, and selection of major and auxiliary mechanical equipment, including heat exchangers, pumps, compressors, cooling systems, vessels, tanks, and packaged equipment.
  • Develop detailed equipment and system specifications, datasheets, and requisition packages for vendor inquiry and procurement support.
  • Review vendor documentation, technical bids, and drawings to ensure compliance with project requirements and applicable codes and standards.
  • Coordinate mechanical process design with civil, structural, electrical, I&C, piping, and construction disciplines.
  • Support plant layout development, equipment arrangement, and interface definition with piping and structural design.
  • Participate in HAZOP, design reviews, constructability reviews, and technical risk assessments.
  • Provide engineering support during construction, commissioning, and startup phases, including responding to RFIs and reviewing field changes.

This position is expected to operate with limited supervision, independently applying standard engineering techniques and exercising sound engineering judgment. Assistance will be provided for complex or nonstandard challenges. Some travel may be required.

Minimum Academic & Professional Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration is preferred.
  • 7 to 12 years of experience in mechanical and process design for power generation or heavy industrial facilities.
  • Preferred experience sectors include power generation (simple cycle and combined cycle), renewable energy facilities, energy storage, petrochemical, industrial plants, or large infrastructure projects.

Key Skills

The successful candidate will be a flexible and dynamic team player capable of integrating into an international engineering environment. Strong communication, analytical, and documentation skills are essential.

Key skills include:

  • Strong knowledge of mechanical process design principles for power and energy facilities.
  • Demonstrated experience with equipment selection, heat & mass balances, and P&IDs.
  • Familiarity with applicable codes and standards (ASME, API, ASTM, TEMA, NFPA, etc.).
  • Experience preparing technical specifications, datasheets, and procurement documentation.
  • Proficiency with industry-standard engineering tools, spreadsheets, and calculation methodologies.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and/or Revit is a plus.
