The full salary range for this position is as follows: Stage Assistant I - $20.38 to $22.47 / Stage Assistant II - $21.40 to $23.61. Expected hiring range is as follows: Stage Assistant I- $20.38 to $21.40 /Stage Assistant II- $21.40 to $22.47.


This is a part-time position with our Parks & Recreation Department.

The Stage Assistant assists in implementing theatrical activities and provides clerical support to professional theatre staff.


DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

Stage Assistant I

This is the entry-level classification in the Stage Assistant series. Positions in this classification typically have little or no directly related work experience and work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks. Incumbents work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks, progressing to general supervision as procedures and processes of the assigned area of responsibility are learned.


Stage Assistant II

This is the journey-level classification in the Stage Assistant series and is distinguished from the I level by the ability to perform the full range of duties assigned with only occasional instruction or assistance when unusual or unique situations arise.Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the lower level of Stage Assistant I, or if filled from the outside, require prior related experience.



Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Perform a variety of duties related to the implementation of theatrical activities; administer one or more assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Assist with the set-up and safety of the stage and theatre for planned activities.
  • Assist with rental reservations including resolving minor reservation issues.
  • Assist with content creation, basic marketing and promotions.
  • Assist with general clerical duties including but not limited to ticket sales, updating/ creating documents and filing.
  • Answer questions from program participants and the public by telephone and in person.
  • Assist in technical work relating to audio, lighting, and stage management such as operating audio or lighting equipment, conducting scene changes during performances, and constructing set pieces and props.
  • Ensure all students, performance attendees, and renters conform to the established policies and procedures; maintain backstage procedures.
  • Assist with basic facility maintenance.
  • Maintain adequate supplies and inventory.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Stage Assistant I

Experience:

Some experience working in a theatrical environment is highly desirable.

Customer service background is highly desirable.


Training:

Completion of formal or informal education sufficient to assure the ability to read and write at the level required for successful job performance.


Stage Assistant II

Experience:

Two years of experience in working in a theatrical environment.

Customer service background is highly desirable.


Training:

Completion of some college courses in a related field is highly desirable.


LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE

Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver’s license may be required by the position.

Knowledge of:

  • Methods, procedures, and practices of theatre operations.
  • Understand basic principles and practices of working effectively with groups or individuals of all ages.
  • Standard office procedures, methods, and computer software applications.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Physical Demands:


Mobility: frequent use of keyboard; frequent walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, and sitting; occasional climbing, bending, standing, and squatting. Lifting: frequently up to 10 pounds; occasionally up to 50 pounds; pushing and pulling up to 80 pounds.

Vision: constant use of overall vision, color and depth vision; frequent reading and close-up work.

Dexterity: frequent repetitive motion; frequent writing; frequent grasping, holding, and reaching.

Hearing/Talking: frequent hearing and talking, in person and on the phone.

Emotional/Psychological: frequent decision-making and concentration; frequent public and/or coworker contact; occasional working alone.

Environmental: frequent exposure to noise.


Work Environment:

Work is performed in a temperature-controlled office and theatre environment subject to noise, machinery and moving objects. Positions may require occasional overtime.


Positions are required to work nights, holidays, and weekends; travel is rare.
