Position Title: Sr. Director, Tax

Your role

Digital Realty Trust, Inc. (NYSE: DLR) is looking to add a Senior Tax Director to its global tax team. The exciting role will play an integral and key part in DLR’s REIT qualification, strategic private capital, tax planning initiatives and operational matters. This individual will work cross-functionally with accounting, finance, acquisition, legal, asset management, and external advisors to ensure transaction execution in a REIT compliant manner while supporting DLR’s growth strategy.

The ideal candidate is an independent thinker with strong technical expertise in REIT taxation, partnership taxation, along with experience in navigating complexities in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. The role will report to VP, Tax and is expected to lead a team of direct reports.

What you’ll do

• Evaluate and implement tax planning strategies related to M&A, capital-market transactions, product support and tax planning within the REIT framework
• Partner with internal teams (acquisition, legal, finance, portfolio management) and external advisors in reviewing transaction documents and negotiating tax related provisions in support of deal execution
• Lead all aspects of U.S. tax and REIT matters related to DLR’s strategic private capital and international joint-ventures and portfolio companies 
• Oversee DLR REIT compliance and qualification testing, including income and asset tests, and REIT due diligence
• Oversee tax compliance and reporting related to the global DLR structure that includes joint-ventures and private capital platform
• Providing support and guidance related to tax operational matters including budgeting, planning and communications with relevant internal stakeholders 
• Develop and implement Global REIT compliance/Tax policies and procedures that are scalable for growth
• Monitor legislative and regulatory developments impacting REITs and the real estate industry and provide real-time guidance to the business in navigating law changes
• Manage, mentor, and develop team members to be best-in-class by fostering an ownership, growth-oriented, and high-performance culture
• Partner with accounting teams to support tax disclosures on financial statements and maintain internal tax controls and documentation to ensure SOX compliance
• Cultivate collaborative relationships with external tax advisors (law and accounting firms) and manage related budgets

What you’ll need 

To meet the basic qualification for this role you will have legal authorization to work permanently in the United States for any employer without requiring a visa transfer or visa sponsorship. In addition, to be a good fit for the opportunity, you will have:

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field; Law/MST/CPA preferred.
• Minimum of 12 years of progressive tax experience in public accounting or similar industry roles 
• Deep technical knowledge of REIT, partnership and inbound taxation for non-U.S. investors, including compliance and reporting strategies
• Strong communication skills with the ability to present complex tax matters to senior leadership and non-tax stakeholders
• Proven leadership and team/project management experience

The following skill sets are also preferred but not necessary for the day one success, however, the role is expected to grow and develop in the following areas:

• International tax experience (outbound)
• Accounting for income taxes under ASC 740
• Financial products
• Tax technology solution and implementation
