Position Summary
Reporting to the Manager of Stress & Structural Engineering, the Senior Structural / Mechanical Engineer is responsible for providing engineering services related to piping systems, pipe supports, skids, ductwork, pressure parts, structural steel supports, and related equipment. This role will perform engineering design and analysis activities while also managing outsourced engineering resources to ensure quality, schedule, and technical compliance.
The ideal candidate will have strong experience in structural and piping design, engineering analysis, applicable industry codes, and coordination with internal teams, customers, and external vendors.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform design and analysis of ductwork, structural steel frames, skids, piping systems, pressure parts, and support structures.
- Generate load diagrams and structural loading calculations for equipment, duct supports, and steel framing systems.
- Ensure the structural integrity, constructability, and code compliance of piping, ductwork, pressure parts, and support systems.
- Conduct site assessments and field investigations to gather information required for the development of piping and ductwork arrangements.
- Develop and maintain 3D analysis models for new and modified designs.
- Prepare engineering calculations, technical reports, marked-up drawings, sketches, spreadsheets, and presentations to communicate analysis results.
- Coordinate engineering activities with internal departments and external vendors.
- Manage outsourced engineering work, including scope, schedule, budget, technical reviews, and deliverables.
- Review and approve drawings, bills of material, and engineering designs to ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, company procedures, and customer specifications.
- Monitor project schedules and ensure engineering deliverables are completed on time.
- Review customer specifications and technical documents to ensure design compliance.
- Support proposal development by providing engineering input, labor estimates, and material estimates.
- Participate in customer meetings and collaborate with engineering consultants and affiliated business units on technical matters.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Structural Engineering.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in piping, ductwork, pressure part, structural steel, or related engineering design.
- Experience reading and interpreting:
- Boiler general arrangement drawings
- Detailed fabrication drawings
- Piping layouts
- Pipe isometric drawings
- Pipe support drawings
- P&IDs
- Working knowledge of:
- ASME BPVC Section I
- ASME BPVC Section XIII
- ASME B31.1 and B31.3
- Working knowledge of weld design requirements per:
- AWS D1.1
- AWS D1.3
- ASME Section IX
- Experience using:
- STAAD.Pro
- AutoPIPE and/or CAESAR II
- Navisworks (model integration, clash detection, and coordination)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work effectively in a deadline-driven environment.
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally as required.
Preferred
- Master's degree in Engineering.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Experience supporting power generation, boiler systems, industrial process equipment, or heavy industrial projects.
