Responsibilities

The Senior Manager of Automation Enablement is responsible for leading the strategy, execution, and scaling of automation initiatives across Mayo Collaborative Services (MCS), with a strong emphasis on laboratory and diagnostic operations. This role partners closely with MCS business and operational leaders to identify, prioritize, and deliver high-value automation solutions.

This position reports to the MCS Senior Director of Data & Analytics, Forecasting, and Automation Enablement and operates under the strategic oversight and guidance of the MCS Chief Digital Innovation Officer (CDIO).

This leader will drive strategic automation outcomes by guiding Solution Architects, Automation Engineers, and external automation vendors to execute against a portfolio of complex, enterprise-level initiatives. The role requires deep operational understanding and strong technical fluency across automation technologies.

Key Responsibilities

Automation Strategy & Execution

  • Define and execute the automation enablement strategy aligned to MCS operational priorities, in partnership with senior leadership
  • Build and manage a portfolio of high-impact automation initiatives, ensuring alignment to enterprise goals and measurable ROI

Operational Partnership

  • Serve as a strategic partner to operational leaders to identify transformation opportunities aligned with broader digital innovation priorities
  • Leverage subject matter expertise in laboratory, diagnostics, and/or MCS operations to ensure solutions are practical, compliant, and impactful

Technical Leadership & Delivery Oversight

  • Lead and direct Solution Architects and Automation Engineers in designing scalable, secure, and maintainable solutions aligned with enterprise architecture standards
  • Oversee delivery of automation solutions across RPA, workflow orchestration, and intelligent automation (AI/ML-enabled) technologies
  • Ensure alignment of technical solutions with enterprise architecture, integration standards, and data strategies in collaboration with Data & Analytics leadership

Vendor & Partner Management

  • Manage relationships with automation vendors and strategic partners, ensuring alignment with MCS digital and innovation priorities
  • Hold vendors accountable for delivery quality, timelines, and business outcomes

Governance, Risk, and Compliance

  • Establish and enforce governance frameworks, standards, and controls for automation development and deployment
  • Drive audit readiness, documentation, and risk mitigation practices consistent with enterprise and MCS standards

Team Leadership & Capability Building

  • Foster strong alignment and collaboration across automation, data & analytics, and operational teams
  • Track and communicate value realization across the automation portfolio to senior leadership

Change Management & Adoption

  • Drive adoption of automation solutions through effective communication, training, and stakeholder engagement
  • Support organizational change efforts aligned with MCS digital transformation initiatives

Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree and a minimum of six years of operational management experience
  • OR a master’s degree and a minimum of three years of operational management experience are required for this position.
  • Acceptable degree disciplines include business, organizational leadership, logistics and supply chain management, engineering, information technology, health care administration, medical laboratory science or equivalent, biology, chemistry, or related field.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Operational management experience must include a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with internal (physician, scientist, administrative, supervisory, and allied health staff) or external client stakeholders.
  • Must have excellent organizational, human relations, decision-making and problem-solving capabilities as well as excellent presentation and communication skills.
  • Must have ability and confidence to effectively function independently, be a self-starter, and a team player.
  • Must have led direct reports in previous positions. Must be capable of effectively presenting to internal and external groups.
  • Must be accountable, adaptable, flexible, creative, dependable, responsible, and able to perform well within multi-functional environments while adhering to Mayo Clinic and MCS policies and procedures.
  • Leadership experience managing technical teams and/or enterprise initiatives
  • Demonstrated experience leading automation programs (RPA, workflow, or intelligent automation) at scale

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Direct experience in Mayo Collaborative Services (MCS) and/or Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (DLMP) operations
  • Strong understanding of laboratory workflows, diagnostics operations, or related healthcare processes
  • Experience leading or building an Automation Center of Excellence (CoE)
  • Familiarity with automation platforms (e.g., UiPath, Automation Anywhere, Power Automate, ServiceNow, etc.)
  • Experience integrating automation with AI/ML capabilities (e.g., document processing, NLP, decisioning, etc.)
