Senior Fleet Technician
About the role:The Senior Fleet Technician performs a wide variety of mechanical repairs to gasoline and diesel-powered automotive, and other power-driven equipment. This position helps manage the preventative, routine, scheduled, and unscheduled maintenance of all vehicles and equipment of the city fleet in a proactive, safe, and efficient manner. You will provide oversight of all fleet maintenance and special projects as assigned by your supervisor.

This position is subject to budget required furloughs to be implemented in the 2026 calendar year.

The work schedule will traditionally include a 40-hour work week, Monday through Friday with multiple shifts available.

As a Senior Fleet Technician, you will:
  • Perform a wide variety of mechanical repairs to gasoline and diesel-powered automotive for City fleet.
  • Ensure a prioritized and cohesive process of vehicle and equipment repairs with rapid turnaround and ensure that quality control procedures are in place and followed.
  • Analyze and develop fleet quality control strategies and management programs to establish continuous fleet management improvement opportunities, standard maintenance and repair methods and time elements, predictive maintenance, life-cycle costing, and vehicle repair/replacement models.
  • Inspect, diagnose, locate and perform repairs and maintenance to light and heavy diesel and gasoline-powered equipment mechanical subsystems including engines, fuel, coding, lube, exhaust, electrical, drive train, and suppression systems.
  • Oversee and track all fuel and fluid transactions, safety, updated training, ensuring compliance withOccupational Safety and Health Administration, Hazmat, Safety Data Sheets, and fuel storage readiness for a year-round operation.
  • Assist in purchasing parts, supplies, and/or services in compliance with purchasing policies when authorized and maintain responsibility of tracking inventory for all associated parts and supplies purchased for fleet maintenance services.
  • Act as primary point of contact for all essential fleet related vendors and internal customers to ensure efficient and effective support.
  • Maintain awareness of new trends and technologies in the field of automotive repair.
  • Contribute fleet maintenance updates and training during facility maintenance and road crew shop meetings.

Wearelooking forcandidateswho demonstrate:
Knowledge of:
  • Fleet maintenance operations regarding scheduling and tracking of work
  • Basic computer skills using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook programs and fleet software applications.
Ability to:
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Communicate clearly and concisely
  • Provide excellent internal customer service
  • Use hand, power, and specialty tools pertaining to automotive truck and equipment repair.
  • Perform a variety of mechanical tasks under normal to limited supervision
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions
  • Read manuals, understand diagrams, and interpret video
  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade (high school diploma or GED).
  • Five years of full-time, professional engine repair, fleet maintenance or related experience.
  • Currently possess a non-probationary driver's license not subject to restrictions related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges
  • Willingness to obtain within 12 months of hire an Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT), or equivalent Master Technician certification
  • Willingness to obtain within 24 months of hire an additionalAutomotive Service Excellence (ASE), Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT), or Master Technician certification

  • A vocational certification or associates degree in automotive, mechanics, or a closely related field
  • Experience in relation to fleet tracking and work scheduling
  • Experience working on medium to heavy-duty automotive machinery
