A privately owned company based in New Hampshire, HCNA has provided state-of-the-art leak detection for the U.S. DOD and commercial aviation customers for more than 20 years. The company’s highly experienced technicians perform real-time pressure measurement to detect leaks in pressurized underground pipelines.
Position Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Systems Engineer / Controls Engineer to support the design,
implementation, and maintenance of advanced control systems, including automation and Leak Detection
Systems (LDS). This role is critical to ensuring the reliability, security, and performance of HCNA’s control
infrastructure, with a strong emphasis on Siemens PLC and SCADA technologies.
Location: Portsmouth, NH
Travel Requirement: Up to 50%
Education
B.S. Electrical Engineering, Control Systems, Automation, or related field (preferred).
Work Experience
- Proven experience designing, programming, implementing, and troubleshooting industrial PLC and HMI systems, preferably in the Oil & Gas industry.
- Hands-on expertise with Siemens PLCs (S7-300, S7-400, S7-1200, S7-1500).
- Strong knowledge of Siemens networking architecture and communication protocols (MPI, Profibus, Profinet).
- Proficiency in SIMATIC Step 7 (TIA Portal) for PLC programming.
- Skilled in WinCC SCADA development, including tag configuration, graphical interface design, reporting, trending, archiving, and scripting.
- Familiarity with Siemens, GE Fanuc, and Allen-Bradley PLCs, with working knowledge of other platforms.
- Experience with network configurations (serial, TCP/IP, fiber optic converters).
- Knowledge of industrial protocols such as MODBUS, Data Highway, OPC, and integration using Red Lion Protocol Conversion devices.
Core Competencies
- Strong working knowledge of WinCC for SCADA/HMI development.
- Proficiency in PLC programming languages (Ladder Logic, Structured Text).
- Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (OPC UA, PROFIBUS, Ethernet/IP).
Technical Competencies
- Advanced certifications in automation technologies (highly desirable).
- Experience implementing industrial cybersecurity best practices.
- Proficiency in scripting/programming for automation customization, including SQL Server integration.
- Ability to read and generate PLC electrical interface drawings, system architecture diagrams, and I/O loop schematics.
Functional Responsibilities
- PLC Programming: Develop and troubleshoot applications using SIMATIC Step 7 (TIA Portal) and SQL Server.
- SCADA Programming: Design and implement SCADA/HMI solutions using WinCC (versions 6.0–7.5 and TIA Portal).
- Software Configuration Management: Document, track, and control changes to software code and related artifacts.
- Technical Support: Provide high-level technical assistance and troubleshooting as needed.
- Travel: Up to 50% travel to job sites is required.
Key Duties and Projects
- Manage development, configuration, maintenance, and upgrades of HCNA control systems, including automation and LDS.
- Develop new functionalities to enhance automation and LDS software based on customer and internal requirements.
- Test new PLC hardware/software for compatibility with existing systems.
- Track and document changes to ensure system reliability and traceability.
- Support field activities including commissioning, testing, maintenance, troubleshooting, and upgrades.
- Execute PLDS site testing per HCNA-approved procedures and checklists.
Additional Skills
- Strong verbal communication skills to integrate HCNA systems with client pump control systems.
- Proven ability to commission systems from design through startup, including O&M manual development, customer training, and acceptance testing.
- Skilled in writing detailed technical reports (commissioning, annual, quarterly, and support visits).
- Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and ability to work independently or collaboratively.
- Strong documentation skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts for nontechnical stakeholders.
