Senior JIB Accountant (Contract)

The Senior Joint Interest Billing (JIB) Accountant is responsible for managing and overseeing the JIB function for oil and gas operations, while also supporting general ledger activities with an emphasis on service company accounting. This role ensures accurate allocation, coding, and reporting of expenses to wells and partners, while maintaining compliance with COPAS standards and internal controls. The position also contributes to process improvements and provides guidance to junior team members.

Key Responsibilities

General Ledger & Month-End Close

  • Perform monthly account reconciliations to ensure accuracy and completeness
  • Prepare and post journal entries and accruals, particularly related to service company operations
  • Support month-end close activities and financial reporting processes

Joint Interest Billing (JIB)

  • Prepare and post monthly JIB entries as part of the billing cycle
  • Review and finalize JIB allocations in accordance with DOI and COPAS guidelines
  • Analyze and reconcile JIB transactions, including suspense accounts and period variances
  • Ensure timely and accurate distribution of invoices to non-operating partners
  • Respond to partner inquiries and audits, providing detailed supporting documentation
  • Assist with netting arrangements, cash calls, and ownership changes

Leadership & Process Improvement

  • Provide training, mentorship, and support to JIB staff
  • Contribute to system enhancements, automation initiatives, and process documentation
  • Ensure adherence to internal controls and support audit activities
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to ensure consistent and timely accounting treatment

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred (or equivalent experience)
  • 5+ years of oil and gas accounting experience
  • Strong knowledge of joint interest accounting and COPAS standards
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and experience with document management systems
  • Proficiency with accounting systems such as SAP, Oracle, Enertia, or OGSYS
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
