Job Description

The Recycling Specialist II plays a key role in the university’s self-managed waste and recycling program, operating as part of a small-city style campus services team. In this role, you collect, transport, and process waste, recycling, and compost materials across campus, ensuring a clean, safe, and environmentally responsible environment for students, staff, and visitors.

Responsibilities

  • Operate university vehicles such as trucks, vans, golf carts, and small carts to service designated waste, recycling, and compost pickup locations across campus.
  • Follow assigned routes and schedules to stop at specific waste pickup locations and collect waste, recycling, and compost materials.
  • Lift and load waste, recycling, and compost bins into collection vehicles safely and efficiently, including handling heavy containers when required.
  • Transport collected materials to the appropriate waste processing facilities and properly empty collection vehicles.
  • Sort materials into recycling, waste, and compost streams according to established procedures and guidelines.
  • Maintain recycling and trash stations in an orderly, clean, and safe condition throughout campus.
  • Perform routine trash and recycling removal from bins and cans around campus, ensuring areas remain tidy and free of debris.
  • Use safe work practices while lifting, carrying, driving, and handling equipment and materials.
  • Support overall campus cleanliness by assisting with related cleaning and waste-handling tasks as needed.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors regarding route completion, issues encountered, or safety concerns.
Essential Skills
  • Ability to lift up to 100 pounds safely and repeatedly during the shift.
  • Experience working in a physically demanding environment, such as labor, warehouse, facilities, custodial, or similar roles.
  • Capability to sit, stand, crouch, lift, reach, and walk for the entire shift.
  • Ability to perform trash removal and recycling collection from bins and cans around campus.
  • Skill in keeping recycling and trash stations orderly, clean, and well organized.
  • Safe driving skills and ability to operate university vehicles including trucks, vans, golf carts, and small carts.
  • Reliability and strong work ethic, supported by two solid professional references confirming relevant experience.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Prior experience in waste management, recycling, custodial services, or facilities operations is beneficial.
  • Familiarity with sorting and handling recycling, waste, and compost materials.
  • Comfort working primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to follow established routes, schedules, and safety procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure proper sorting and clean work areas.
  • Good communication skills to interact with team members and campus personnel.

Work Environment

This role is based on the Atlanta campus and involves working primarily outdoors across university grounds. Most tasks take place in public and campus service areas; there is no work in private living areas, including dorm rooms. You will spend the majority of your shift on your feet, walking between locations, lifting and carrying materials, and operating vehicles such as trucks, vans, golf carts, and small carts. The work is physically demanding and requires comfort working in various weather conditions. Multiple shifts are available, including a weekday first shift (Monday–Friday, approximately 6:00 a.m.–2:30 p.m.), a weekday second shift (Monday–Friday, approximately 2:00 p.m.–10:30 p.m.), and a weekend shift (Thursday–Sunday, approximately 8:00 a.m.–6:30 p.m.). The environment is operational, hands-on, and team-oriented, with a focus on safety, cleanliness, and reliable service to the campus community.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Atlanta, GA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $17.00 - $17.00/hr.
