Job Summary

Performs skilled, journeyman-level technical work in the maintenance and repair of Fire and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) apparatus, vehicles, and equipment. This role requires strong independent judgment within established policies and procedures and may include leading or assisting a team in mechanical repair and maintenance operations.

What You’ll Do (Essential Functions)

  • Inspect, diagnose, install, maintain, repair, and recondition mechanical issues across a wide range of vehicles and equipment
  • Perform preventative maintenance and major repairs on:
    • Fire apparatus and EMS vehicles
    • Diesel and gasoline engines
    • Computerized ignition and fuel systems
    • Exhaust after-treatment systems
    • Transmissions, brakes, suspension, steering, and differentials
    • Hydraulic systems and large-capacity water pumps
    • Generators, marine engines, boats, and firefighting equipment
    • SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) and aerial ladders
  • Construct or rebuild parts as needed and repair/replace vehicle body components
  • Respond to emergency scenes or fire grounds to perform critical repairs
  • Service equipment through lubrication, oil changes, and filter replacement
  • Participate in an on-call rotation for after-hours support
  • Troubleshoot complex mechanical issues and coordinate solutions
  • Maintain accurate records of repairs, parts, and labor
  • Order and retrieve parts and supplies; road test vehicles and perform service calls
  • Operate tools, power equipment, and diagnostic systems safely and effectively
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment
  • Deliver exceptional customer service, problem-solving, and communication in all interactions


Education and Experience:

An equivalent combination of relevant training, education and experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent supplemented by vocational or technical training in automotive maintenance and repair.
  • Five (5) years of experience as a journeyman level mechanic including experience in hydraulics, automotive and heavy truck chassis, gasoline and diesel engines and related components, electrical and charging systems, and large capacity water pumps and related components.

Licenses and/or Certificates:

  • Within three (3) months of position assignment:
    1. Must maintain a valid “B” Florida Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
  • Within one (1) year of position assignment:
    1. Must maintain Brake Inspector as per CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) 396.25
  • Preferred:
    1. Emergency Vehicle Technician certificate
    2. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification

What to Expect in This Role

In this role, you’ll perform skilled maintenance and repair on a wide range of emergency vehicles and equipment, including fire apparatus, EMS units, and specialized firefighting systems. You’ll diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues, perform preventative maintenance, and help ensure all equipment remains safe, reliable, and mission-ready.

You may be called upon to perform emergency repairs in the field or at fire scenes and will participate in an on-call rotation to support after-hours needs. The work requires strong troubleshooting skills, independent judgment, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Additional responsibilities include maintaining accurate service records, coordinating parts and supplies, operating County vehicles for service calls and testing, and using a variety of tools and diagnostic equipment. You’ll also play an important role in maintaining a safe, organized shop and providing exceptional customer service to internal and external partners.
