Job Title: Project Accountant
Job Description

The Project Accountant manages the full financial lifecycle of projects, from initial setup and billing through reporting and month-end close. This role partners closely with Project Managers and leadership to ensure accurate job costing, timely billing, and clear visibility into project performance. It offers high visibility, the opportunity to grow within a project-based accounting team, and exposure to end-to-end project financials in a stable, long-term environment.

Responsibilities

  • Manage project billing in accordance with contract terms, including time and materials, fixed fee, and cost-plus arrangements.
  • Set up new projects, budgets, and rate tables in the accounting system.
  • Track and reconcile job costs, labor, expenses, and revenue for multiple projects.
  • Coordinate with accounts payable and accounts receivable on invoice processing, collections, and cash application.
  • Prepare and distribute monthly project financial reports, including work-in-progress (WIP), unbilled amounts, and profitability analysis.
  • Monitor contract compliance, change orders, and budget variances, and escalate issues as needed.
  • Support month-end close activities related to projects, including reconciliations and journal entries.
  • Assist Project Managers with financial questions, project forecasting, and audit requests.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation and financial records in accordance with internal policies.
  • Collaborate with leadership and cross-functional teams to improve project accounting processes and reporting.
Essential Skills
  • 2–5+ years of experience in project accounting, construction accounting, or professional services accounting.
  • Strong understanding of billing, job costing, and revenue recognition principles.
  • Hands-on experience with accounting functions such as general ledger and account reconciliation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables and VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP.
  • Experience with project-based accounting processes, including WIP and unbilled analysis.
  • Ability to work independently while managing and supporting multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills with high attention to detail.
  • Effective communication skills and comfort partnering with non-finance stakeholders, including Project Managers and leadership.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with ERP systems such as Oracle, Deltek, NetSuite, or similar platforms is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret contract terms and apply them to billing and project accounting.
  • Ability to analyze project financial data and present insights to stakeholders.
  • Interest in growing within a project-based accounting team and taking on broader responsibilities over time.
Work Environment

The role operates in a professional office environment with standard hours of 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with some flexibility. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Plantation, FL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $34.00 - $38.00/hr.
