Job Title: Production Supervisor – Assembly/Weld (1st Shift)

Job Description

The Production Supervisor leads a 1st shift team of approximately 30 employees on the assembly and weld side of the plant. This role manages the full production shift, ensuring the smooth running of operations, adherence to product specifications, and consistent achievement of production targets and deadlines. The supervisor upholds health and safety procedures, drives continuous improvement, and maintains strong control over inventory and quality checks within an automotive manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a 1st shift production team of approximately 30 employees in the assembly and weld department.
  • Oversee all direct and indirect staff within the shift’s chain of command to ensure smooth and efficient production operations.
  • Ensure all products are manufactured according to specified quality standards and customer specifications.
  • Plan, organize, and monitor daily production activities so that targets, deadlines, and customer orders are consistently met.
  • Maintain strict adherence to health and safety procedures and promote a safety-first culture across the shift.
  • Oversee hiring, onboarding, coaching, performance management, and, when necessary, termination decisions for shift team members.
  • Monitor and achieve production numbers, including throughput, scrap, and efficiency metrics.
  • Perform and oversee inventory control activities, including shipping and receiving related to the production area.
  • Coordinate and perform quality checks, ensuring that parts meet specifications and that nonconformances are promptly addressed.
  • Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives to optimize processes, reduce waste, and support lean manufacturing practices.
  • Provide hands-on support and guidance on the assembly and weld lines, including areas supporting major automotive projects.
  • Collaborate with other departments, including maintenance, quality, and logistics, to resolve issues that impact production.
  • Use Microsoft Office tools to track production data, prepare reports, and communicate shift performance and issues.
  • Ensure equipment and work areas are used and maintained in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Support and oversee operations across multiple buildings as required by production needs.

Essential Skills

  • At least 4 years of supervisory experience in an automotive manufacturing facility, preferably with Tier 1 supplier experience.
  • Proven experience supervising and overseeing 30 or more employees on a single shift.
  • Demonstrated responsibility for hiring, firing, coaching, and managing production performance.
  • in production supervision within an automotive environment.
  • Experience with inventory control, including shipping and receiving activities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for reporting, communication, and data tracking.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and ability to enforce health and safety procedures on the production floor.
  • Experience in continuous improvement, lean manufacturing, and process improvement within manufacturing operations.
  • Strong supervisory skills, including coaching employees and managing daily production activities.
  • Experience in manufacturing processes and operations, particularly in the automotive industry.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working in a facility with robotic weld cells or automated assembly equipment.
  • Hands-on quality control experience using micrometers, calipers, and gauges.
  • Familiarity with MIG welding operations and stamping environments.
  • Strong management skills with the ability to lead teams across multiple buildings or departments.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume automotive production environment.
  • Comfort working with continuous improvement methodologies and lean tools.

Work Environment

The role is based in a multi-building automotive manufacturing campus, with responsibility that can extend across six buildings as needed. The facility operates as a typical stamping and assembly plant, with presses ranging from 100 to 600 tons (progressive), MIG welding machines, and orbit forming equipment used in production. The environment is loud and industrial, not the cleanest but not excessively dirty, and requires comfort working around heavy machinery and active production lines. This position is for 1st shift, generally running from approximately 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (with a 30-minute variance), Monday through Friday, with typical weekly hours ranging from 40 to 50 and some Saturdays required based on production demand. Standard industrial safety practices apply, including appropriate personal protective equipment suited to a stamping and welding environment.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Sterling Heights, MI.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $27.00 - $30.00/hr.
