Position Overview

As a Process Modeling Engineer (Scientist/Engineer), you will model new processes and process conditions to enhance product performance and reduce costs for glass and/or ceramic substrates and filters. The role involves developing and applying analytical and numerical tools to build a fundamental understanding of material and process behavior.

This position requires a strong foundation in solid mechanics, expertise in numerical modeling, and the ability to collaborate with globally distributed teams and customers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Model new processes and conditions to improve product performance and reduce costs
  • Develop and apply analytical and numerical models (solid mechanics-based simulations)
  • Collaborate with global research, engineering, and commercial teams
  • Communicate technical results effectively to stakeholders

Core Job Duties

  • Apply solid mechanics using analytical methods and FEA/BEM to predict:
  • Thermo-mechanical stress
  • Deformation/warpage
  • Residual stress in glass/ceramic components
  • Develop transient thermal-stress models for process cycles (heating/cooling)
  • Simulate contact, fixturing, and handling to reduce damage risk and variability
  • Evaluate thin film/coating stress and interfacial delamination risk
  • Provide mentorship and recommend new modeling/testing capabilities
  • Support product engineering and customer-related problem solving
  • Prepare technical reports, invention disclosures, and publications

Required Qualifications

  • M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related field with 4+ years of experience
  • OR
  • Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related field

Required Skills

  • Experience with finite element analysis (FEA) software (commercial or open-source)
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical behavior of soft materials (gels, polymers)
  • Ability to convert engineering problems into mathematical models
  • Experience designing and validating experiments
  • Strong programming and mathematical skills for FEA/BEM modeling
  • Experience with tools such as Abaqus or Ansys

Desired Skills

  • Experience in thin film mechanics and material characterization
  • Experience in process and product engineering
  • Knowledge of material testing techniques
  • Ability to lead experiments, data analysis, and performance evaluations

Soft Skills

  • Strong communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to work across global, cross-functional teams
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities
