About Us:We work directly with the public as they enjoy our 40 swimming pools and 23 splash pads. We provide our pool lifeguards with regular training and recertification. We also offer an exciting work environment with room for growth! The mission of our department goes beyond providing recreational activities and maintaining parks and facilities. About You:You enjoy working with people from all backgrounds, representing an inclusive, community engaged agency!You are a motivated, leader with experience directing pool lifeguard teams and looking to step into a supervisory role. You are ready to engage with the public, lead and train lifeguard staff, operate a public pool facility and uphold county and state regulations.

Prepares work schedules for staff, anticipating patron weekly attendance and insuring proper lifeguard coverage within budget limits.

Prepares employee performance evaluations, handles grievances at the first level, and may resolve disciplinary problems or recommend a resolution to the immediate supervisor.

May establish rules, regulations, and standards of safety at assigned facility within well-defined guidelines set by the department; maintains control over the number of patrons admitted to the facility to insure efficient patron usage and a minimum of disruptive behavior.

Determines level of training necessary to meet department standards and utilizes department's training and instructional procedures to plan content of training program for staff.

Instructs staff in first aid, swimming, and pool lifeguard and lifesaving principles, methods and techniques.

Develops lesson plans for Learn-to-Swim Program, adapting the basic County program to specific needs at assigned pool.

Conducts classes to instruct lifeguards in effective teaching techniques.

Responds to and resolves incidents at the pool such as persistent violations of safety rules, serious injuries, or minor confrontations among patrons.

Confers with parents of unruly patrons or unresponsive swimming students in an attempt to modify behavior so as to allow patrons to return to pool or students to learn to swim.

Operates mechanical equipment used at the pool facility including valves, pumps, water conditioning equipment, and drains, in order to keep pool in operation; reads gauges to detect improper operation of the system; trains subordinate staff to perform minor maintenance and adjustment tasks; determines when pool fails to meet health standards andhas the authority toclosethe pool.

Reviews, verifies, and maintains employee time records, maintenance and service records, and pool supplies expenditures to insure budget control.

Completes and forwards incident reports in accordance with prescribed procedure; maintains pool log in which all incidents are recorded.

Engages in the physical fitness program established by the Department in order to maintain capability to perform pool lifesaving duties.

REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY:
Option I:Six months (960 hours) of experience as a* Senior Pool Lifeguard** in Los Angeles County service.

*To qualify under this option you must have held the title of Senior Pool Lifeguard.

-OR-

Option II:Six months (960 hours) of experience supervising lifeguards or providing swimming instruction at a school or public swimming pool***.

Certification:

Completion of the Department of Parks and Recreation's Lifeguard Training Program consisting of an American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certificate, American Red Cross Emergency Medical Response Certificate, American Red Cross Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Automated External Defibrillator (CPR/AED) for the Professional Lifeguard Certificate, American Red Cross Bloodborne Pathogens Certificate and a Certified Pool Operator Certificate.

Instructor's Certification:

American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor's Certificate, American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor's Certificate and American Red Cross Emergency Medical Response Instructor's Certificate.

Vision:

At least 20/30 with both eyes open with correction.

All certifications will be required before appointment to the position.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:

**At the level of Senior Pool Lifeguard is defined as providing technical direction to a staff of pool lifeguards at a swimming pool.

***Public Swimming Pool is defined as any swimming pool intended for public use, including pools operated by public agencies or facilities such as schools, hotels, apartments or clubs, and excluding only private single-family residential pools.

LICENSE:May require a valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

PHYSICAL CLASS:4 - Arduous - Frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working above ground on irregular surfaces. It includes those positions that occasionally demand extraordinary physical activity such as those in safety positions.

Desirable Qualifications:
Credit will be given for the following:-Experience conducting Safety Inspection-Experience coaching Aquatics Sports-Experience planning Aquatic event -Certification as a Certified Pool Operator (CPO)-Possession of a valid Diver Certification

WITHHOLD INFORMATION:
No withhold will be allowed for this examination. Required experience must be fully met and indicated on the application by the last day of filing

OUT-OF-CLASS EXPERIENCE:
No out-of-class experience will be accepted for this examination.
EXAMINATION CONTENT:This examination will consist of:

TRAINING & EXPERIENCE: This assessment type will evaluate the training and experience you list on a questionnaire and assign a score based on a standardized scoring system. This part of the assessment is weighted 100% of your total score and assesses professional/technical knowledge in Safety Inspection, Coaching Aquatics Sports, Aquatic event planning, and Pool Operator and Diver Certifications.

Applicants must receive a passing score of 70% or higher to be place on the eligible list.

Eligibility Information:

Candidates who pass the assessment are place on a list in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months.

NOTE:We may use an alternative banding method in line with Civil Service Rule 11.01(D).
