Pipeline Engineer II
Location: Salt Lake City, UT Hybrid
Duration: Until Jun 2027 (with a possibility of extension)
Overview:
We are seeking a skilled Pipeline Engineer II responsible for the design, analysis, and execution support of high-pressure steel natural gas pipeline systems for a Feeder-Line Replacement program. The role ensures all engineering work complies with federal regulations (CFR Part 192), company standards, and industry best practices, with a strong focus on safety, integrity, and operability.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and support routing, layout, and engineering of high-pressure natural gas transmission pipelines
- Determine optimal placement of block valves, tap valves, and associated pipeline components
- Design pipeline crossings for rivers, highways, railroads, and interstates using open cut and trenchless construction methods
- Perform engineering analysis for pipeline stress conditions including:
- Internal pressure
- External loads and soil interaction
- Thermal expansion
- Seismic and dynamic effects
- Specify pipeline materials, coatings, and related construction requirements
- Prepare and review engineering deliverables including:
- Design calculations
- Technical reports
- Forms, checklists, and compliance documentation
- Develop pressure testing procedures and support commissioning and startup activities
- Track project schedules, monitor budgets, and support project delivery milestones
- Ensure compliance with CFR Part 192, company standards, and applicable codes
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including:
- Design/Drafting teams (construction drawings)
- Right-of-Way agents (easement and land access coordination)
- Cathodic protection engineers (corrosion control systems)
- Environmental specialists (wetlands, wildlife, and cultural resource compliance)
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Civil Engineering from an accredited institution
- 4–7 years of relevant pipeline engineering experience
- Strong understanding of:
- High-pressure steel pipeline design and construction practices
- Pipeline codes and standards (especially CFR Part 192)
- Experience in engineering analysis related to pipeline stress and integrity
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and engineering/design tools
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with pipeline integrity or feeder-line replacement programs
- Exposure to trenchless construction techniques (HDD, boring, etc.)
- Knowledge of corrosion control systems (cathodic protection)
- Familiarity with scheduling and cost tracking tools
- Experience working in utility or oil & gas transmission projects
Reporting Structure
This position typically reports to a Senior Engineer, Lead Engineer, or Engineering Manager and works closely with multidisciplinary project teams.
