On Call Librarian

The City of Milwaukie seeks qualified, energetic, service-minded people to fill on-call librarian positions in adult and youth services.

On-call librariansperform professional-level reference and readers’ advisory duties at both the adult and children’s service desks. Duties include but are not limited to helping patrons locate library materials, find information, access eBooks, and use public computers. On-call librarians in the children’s library may occasionally present programs such as story time.

The ideal candidate will be adaptable and responsive, enjoy public service, and have a flexible schedule. We seek candidates who have excellent interpersonal skills and are committed to creating a welcoming space for all patrons in a public library.

Requirements:

  • Master's degree in library science from an ALA-accredited program
  • One year of customer service experience
  • Must be able to work Saturdays, Sundays, and some weekdays
  • Must accept at least one on-call shift every two months, if shifts are available

The selection process will include screening the application, interviewing the candidate, and successfully completing the City background check.

Candidates who are bilingual in English and Spanish or Russian are eligible for a 3% bilingual incentive after completing a fluency assessment.

  • Deliver library services to community
    • Assist library patrons at service desks
    • Provide information, instruction, and assistance to library patrons
  • Maintain a safe and welcoming environment
    • Greet library visitors and monitor spaces proactively
    • Address disruptions, striking balance, to create safe and comfortable environment.
    • Seek support from other staff, managers, and police whenever needed.

Education/Certifications:

  • Ability to de-escalate
