Position Overview
The Network Engineer will support the design, implementation, integration, and sustainment of shipboard network architectures, with a primary focus on the Consolidated Afloat Networks and Enterprise Services (CANES) environment. This role is critical to ensuring secure, reliable, and mission-ready network capabilities across fleet platforms, supporting operational requirements and cybersecurity compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and maintain shipboard network systems, including CANES architecture, supporting:
- Local Area Networks (LAN)
- Wide Area Networks (WAN)
- Afloat enterprise services and tactical data environments
- Plan and manage network configurations (NetConfig) for all supported systems, including:
- Ports, Protocols, and Services (PPS) matrices
- IP schema development (including platform/aircraft integration where applicable)
- Perform network modeling, analysis, and capacity planning to support fleet operations and system scalability
- Lead network integration, testing, and validation efforts in lab and operational/test environments
- Serve as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for:
- CANES and shipboard network operations
- Network software troubleshooting and issue resolution for Fleet and SSA environments
- Coordinate with:
- Platform Cybersecurity (CYBER) teams to ensure compliance with RMF, STIGs, and external connectivity requirements
- Mission Systems teams to support evolving operational capabilities
- Develop, review, and maintain all required network documentation and artifacts, including:
- Network architecture diagrams and configuration baselines
- NATOPS inputs (checklists, warnings, cautions, notes)
- System Administrator Manuals
- Support configuration management (CM) processes, including maintaining hardware/software configuration baselines (e.g., HSCMs)
- Implement and maintain network security measures in accordance with DoD cybersecurity policies and standards
- Research, evaluate, and recommend network hardware, software, and CANES-related technologies
Required Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree (BS or BA) in a technical discipline (required)
Experience:
- Mid-Level: Minimum of 5 years of experience in network implementation and support
- Senior-Level: Minimum of 10 years of experience in network design, implementation, and leadership
- Experience with CANES or other Navy shipboard network environments strongly preferred
Required Skills & Certifications
- Strong understanding of:
- CANES architecture and afloat network environments
- Network design, configuration, and troubleshooting
- Network security implementation (STIGs, RMF, ACAS familiarity preferred)
- Experience with:
- Network integration and test events (lab and operational environments)
- Developing and managing technical network artifacts and documentation
Certifications (required or ability to obtain):
- CompTIA Network+ (Net+)
- CompTIA Security+ (Sec+)
Clearance:
- Active TS/SCI clearance with polygraph, or ability to obtain
Additional Responsibilities (Senior Level)
- Lead CANES/network engineering efforts across multiple platforms or programs
- Provide technical direction and mentorship to junior engineers
- Serve as primary technical authority for shipboard network design and integration decisions
Nice-to-Have (Highly Desired for Navy Roles)
- Experience supporting U.S. Navy platforms or NAVAIR programs
- Familiarity with:
- Afloat networks, tactical data links, and mission systems integration
- eMASS, ACAS, and DoD cybersecurity frameworks
- Prior experience working in lab/test environments and Fleet support roles
