Job Title: Mechanical Startup Lead 2Job DescriptionThe Mechanical Startup Lead 2 provides hands-on leadership and technical support for mechanical startup and commissioning activities at a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facility. This role focuses on ensuring mechanical and piping systems are fully ready for safe startup, coordinating closely with operations, engineering, construction, and vendors to meet schedule, budget, and quality requirements. The position plays a key role in verifying system readiness, supporting field startup execution, and driving issue resolution to enable safe, compliant, and efficient plant operation.
Responsibilities
- Assist in planning the proper sequence and schedule of mechanical startup activities to ensure completion within established schedule and budget requirements.
- Perform project startup and commissioning activities under the direction of the Site Startup Manager, focusing on mechanical and piping systems.
- Develop and manage project startup budgets and schedules as directed by the Site Startup Manager, ensuring alignment with overall project milestones.
- Accurately document startup and commissioning results, including development and maintenance of punch lists and resolution tracking.
- Develop comprehensive Startup Turnover Packages to support a smooth transition to operations.
- Develop and support the implementation of owner startup procedures on the project, ensuring they are followed consistently in the field.
- Verify mechanical and piping system readiness prior to equipment startup, including completion of installation, inspections, and all pre‑startup requirements.
- Perform piping and system walkdowns to confirm systems are safe, complete, and ready for initial operation.
- Confirm readiness of upstream and downstream process systems prior to startup and coordinate mechanical system interfaces with operations, electrical, I&C, and process stakeholders to support safe startup sequencing.
- Verify availability of required OEM‑recommended spare parts, consumables, and startup materials prior to equipment startup, identifying and addressing missing or critical spares to avoid startup delays.
- Serve as the primary mechanical interface with vendors during equipment startup activities, coordinating vendor site activities, startup timing, and execution in accordance with approved startup procedures.
- Ensure mechanical readiness and site conditions meet vendor and startup requirements before energization or operation of equipment.
- Support field execution of mechanical startup and commissioning activities under the direction of the Site Startup Manager.
- Coordinate with craft labor, contractors, and vendors during startup events to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality execution.
- Enforce safety standards during startup activities, including proper application of lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA requirements and applicable environmental and site safety regulations during mechanical startup activities.
- Identify mechanical installation or readiness issues discovered during startup and coordinate corrective actions with engineering, construction, vendors, and operations teams.
- Ensure that the quality requirements of applicable plans, specifications, and standards are met for all mechanical startup work.
- Identify installation problems involving equipment such as gas compressors, relief valves, process pumps, heat exchangers, vaporizers, pressure valves, and pressure tanks, and help develop and implement corrective solutions.
- Read and interpret P6 schedules to align mechanical startup activities with overall project planning and execution.
- Contribute to continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to enhance startup processes and organizational efficiency.
Essential Skills- 5+ years of experience providing mechanical startup support with a focus on piping readiness, system interface verification, spare parts validation, and direct coordination with vendors during equipment startup.
- Demonstrated startup and commissioning experience at a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plant.
- Experience supporting startup of LNG mechanical equipment including piping systems, rotating equipment, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, mechanical packages, and utility systems.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical equipment and systems such as gas compressors, relief valves, process pumps, heat exchangers, vaporizers, pressure valves, and pressure tanks.
- Adequate knowledge of OSHA regulations and applicable environmental requirements related to mechanical and startup activities.
- Adequate knowledge of LNG or fossil power plants and major equipment and systems design and operation.
- Adequate knowledge of applicable codes and regulations for pressurized piping and vessels.
- Adequate knowledge of lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures and their application during startup and commissioning.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, operations manuals, and P6 schedules.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with employees across all management levels.
- Proven ability to plan and organize project startup activities in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
- Ability to manage time effectively and handle multiple assignments simultaneously in a dynamic project setting.
- Self-starter with a proactive approach to identifying and resolving issues during startup.
- Ability to build effective working relationships with plant staff, engineering and design teams, and vendors.
Additional Skills & Qualifications- Experience coordinating mechanical system interfaces with operations, electrical, I&C, and process stakeholders to support safe startup sequencing.
- Experience verifying mechanical and piping system readiness through field walkdowns and inspections.
- Experience verifying OEM‑recommended spare parts, consumables, and startup materials and addressing gaps prior to startup.
- Experience developing and managing startup budgets and schedules under guidance from a Site Startup Manager.
- Experience preparing Startup Turnover Packages and documenting commissioning results, including punch lists.
- Capacity to identify opportunities for process improvement and contribute to enhancing startup and commissioning practices.
- Strong relationship-building skills with contractors and vendors to support efficient startup execution.
- Comfort working in a field-based, construction and operations environment at large industrial facilities such as LNG or fossil power plants.
Work EnvironmentThis role is based on site at an LNG plant and operates in a field-focused, industrial environment. Work is performed in and around mechanical and piping systems, rotating equipment, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, vaporizers, and associated utility systems. The position involves frequent time in process areas, mechanical rooms, and outdoor plant spaces, with regular interaction with construction crews, plant operations, engineering teams, and vendor representatives. The work follows established safety procedures, including OSHA and site-specific requirements and strict adherence to LOTO practices during startup and commissioning activities. The environment is fast-paced and schedule-driven, with work aligned to project startup milestones and P6-based schedules. Appropriate personal protective equipment is required in plant areas, and the role demands a strong safety mindset and comfort working in a large-scale energy facility.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $40.00 - $55.00/hr.
