The Mechanical Engineering Intern will support the identification, documentation, and analysis of infrastructure assets, with an emphasis on mechanical and fire life-safety systems. This role blends fieldwork, data management, and engineering analysis to improve asset visibility, condition tracking, and maintenance planning. Interns will work closely with engineering and maintenance staff to evaluate existing conditions, interpret construction documents, and contribute to systemwide asset management initiatives.
- Conduct field inspections of fire life safety and mechanical assets, including stations, platforms, drainage systems, and ancillary structures.
- Gather, document, and organize asset data including location, condition, photographs, and system attributes.
- Assist in interpreting engineering drawings, blueprints, and as-built documents to verify field conditions.
- Support development and refinement of asset inventories and databases for maintenance planning.
- Utilize AutoCAD to review, update, and develop drawings reflecting existing conditions.
- Assist in identifying maintenance needs, deficiencies, and potential risks within civil infrastructure systems and mechanical systems.
- Collaborate with engineers and maintenance personnel to track asset extents and system connectivity.
- Travel throughout the MBTA system to perform site visits and data collection.
- Support review and organization of engineering and service documentation.
- Participate in team / staff meetings, organization events, fieldwork, project teams, or other duties as needed.

- Perform all other duties and projects that may be assigned.

- Enrolled, for entire duration of employment, in the undergraduate / bachelor’s degree program of an accredited college / university in Mechanical Engineering or directly related Engineering field.
- Strong interest in infrastructure, mechanical fire life safety, and plumbing / drainage systems, field engineering, and maintenance operations.
- Above average ability to work independently with limited supervision in both office and field environments
- Above average ability to interpret engineering drawings and correlate with field conditions
- Above average proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel required).
- Above average proficiency in AutoCAD preferred.
- Ability to work in physically active environments, including walking, climbing, and accessing facilities.
- Willingness and ability to travel across the MBTA system (buses, trains, etc.).
- Ability to complete and comply with MBTA Right of Way (ROW) training and certification (training provided by MBTA).
- Above average ability to communicate effectively in English, both in written and oral forms.
- Highly organized, motivated, and have great attention-to-detail.
- Strong interest in public service, transit, or transportation and how it operates.
- Above average ability to work effectively in diverse, collaborative, fast-paced environments as well as independently.
- Ability to independently commute to assigned work locations in the Boston, MA metro area, as required by the role.
- Authorized to work in the United States (international students in CPT, STEM, or OPT programs through a university are eligible to apply). The MBTA does not provide visa sponsorship, such as H1-B status.
