Job Description

The Maintenance Apprentice supports safe and reliable plant operations by performing mechanical and electrical maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on production and facility equipment in an industrial manufacturing environment. This contract-to-hire role offers hands-on experience with a wide range of systems, including pumps, boilers, motors, gearboxes, hydraulics, pneumatics, and PLC-controlled equipment, while working closely with experienced maintenance professionals to develop technical skills and preventive maintenance practices.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot and repair production and plant equipment with a focus on both mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Perform piping work, including cutting, threading, and installing pipe for various plant systems.
  • Troubleshoot, rebuild, repair, and replace pumps, including progressive cavity, diaphragm, and gear-driven pumps.
  • Support operation and maintenance of steam boilers and thermal oil heaters, including understanding their applications and controls.
  • Assist with the maintenance of industrial air compressors and pneumatic piping systems.
  • Use electrical, air-driven, and manual hand tools to perform maintenance and repair tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Operate and use arc welders, acetylene torches, and other open-flame equipment for pipe fitting and welding tasks.
  • Apply strong troubleshooting skills to identify equipment and process problems and recommend safe, cost-effective repair or replacement solutions.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on equipment and help determine and implement new preventive maintenance procedures as needed.
  • Complete daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance checklists accurately and on time.
  • Fill out T3P Personal Risk Assessment Forms, Safety Task Planner, and Good Catch Forms daily to support a strong safety culture.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in both the maintenance shop and at job sites within the plant.
  • Read and interpret schematics and blueprints to support maintenance and repair activities.
  • Assist with maintenance and troubleshooting of motors, gearboxes, hydraulics, pneumatics, and 3-phase electrical systems up to 480 volts.
  • Troubleshoot PLC-controlled equipment (no programming required) to support equipment uptime.
  • Operate a forklift as needed to move materials, tools, and equipment safely.
  • Work 1st shift (6:00 AM – 2:30 PM), Monday through Friday, with some Saturdays required and significant overtime during ramp season.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum 2–5 years of experience as a Maintenance Technician or in a similar industrial maintenance role.
  • Strong mechanical troubleshooting and repair experience with production and plant equipment.
  • Experience with both mechanical and electrical maintenance, with an approximate 50/50 split (no programming required).
  • Hands-on experience with pumps, including troubleshooting, rebuilding, repair, and replacement of progressive cavity, diaphragm, and gear-driven pumps.
  • Working knowledge of steam boilers and thermal oil heaters, including their applications and controls.
  • Working knowledge of industrial air compressors and pneumatic piping systems.
  • Ability to read and work from electrical and mechanical schematics and blueprints.
  • Experience with preventive maintenance, including performing scheduled tasks and documenting work on checklists.
  • Proficiency with electrical, air-driven, and manual hand tools used in industrial maintenance.
  • Ability to work with 3-phase electrical systems and equipment up to 480 volts.
  • Experience with motors, gearboxes, hydraulics, and pneumatics in an industrial setting.
  • Basic PLC troubleshooting skills (no programming required).
  • Ability to perform pipe fitting and pipe welding tasks safely and effectively.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills to define problems and develop safe, cost-effective repair solutions.
  • Good cleanliness and organizational skills in the work area and maintenance shop.
  • Ability to operate a forklift safely as needed.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Piping experience, including cutting, threading, and installing pipe, is a significant plus.
  • Experience using arc welders, acetylene torches, and other open-flame tools for maintenance tasks.
  • Mechanical aptitude with experience in maintenance mechanics or industrial maintenance.
  • Experience with maintenance repair on a variety of industrial equipment, including conveyors, pumps, and rotating machinery.
  • Familiarity with maintenance documentation, including checklists, risk assessments, and safety planning forms.
  • Comfort working with gearboxes, motors, and other power transmission components.
  • Ability to collaborate with production and maintenance teams to minimize downtime and support continuous operations.

Work Environment

This role is based in a non-climate-controlled, hot industrial manufacturing environment with active production lines and heavy equipment. You will work primarily on 1st shift from 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM, Monday through Friday, with some Saturdays required and substantial overtime during ramp season. The work involves frequent use of industrial tools and equipment such as electrical and air-driven hand tools, arc welders, acetylene torches, forklifts, and other maintenance-related machinery. You will move throughout the plant, work in and around operating equipment, and perform tasks that may require standing, bending, lifting, and working in tight or elevated spaces while following all safety procedures and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $30.00/hr.
