Job Title: Low Voltage Technician II ($24-$26/HR)

Job Description

The Low Voltage Technician I works as a contributing member of a technical team to install, route, terminate, and test low-voltage cabling systems in commercial construction environments. This entry-level role is ideal for someone with up to one year of experience in the structured cabling or electrical field who has strong mechanical aptitude, basic construction knowledge, and a willingness to learn. The technician follows project prints and procedures, completes required documentation accurately, and supports the installation of copper and fiber optic infrastructure in accordance with industry standards and safety requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Install work area outlets for floor monuments, modular furniture, and wall locations using appropriate boxes, surface mount hardware, and box eliminators.
  • Pull and route cable through walls using fish tape or other approved methods, and route cable through modular furniture systems as required.
  • Perform pre-termination procedures, including organizing, forming, and dressing cables, determining proper cable length and slack, and labeling cables accurately.
  • Suspend and support cabling correctly using cable tray, J-hooks, D-rings, bridal rings, trapeze systems, and other approved support methods.
  • Build telecommunications closets by mounting and installing backboards, cross-connects, racks, patch panels, fiber optic components, and related hardware.
  • Install grounding for racks, equipment, and cabling as required by project specifications and industry standards.
  • Perform fire-stopping procedures on fire-rated walls, including installing sleeves, pulling cable through sleeves, and properly sealing core penetrations.
  • Terminate low-voltage devices and connections for Cat 5, Cat 6, and fiber optic cabling in accordance with manufacturer and project specifications.
  • Follow construction drawings, blueprints, and prints to complete installations accurately and to scope.
  • Conduct basic termination and testing of low-voltage cabling to verify performance and compliance with project requirements.
  • Complete all required paperwork accurately and on time, including timesheets, material transfers, work orders, change orders, tool transfers, and other project documentation.
  • Work safely on active construction sites, following OSHA guidelines and site-specific safety procedures.
  • Collaborate with team members and supervisors to meet project schedules, quality standards, and customer expectations.
  • Adapt to changing project locations and tasks, including transitioning between different sites as required.

Essential Skills

  • Up to one (1–2) year of experience in the electrical or structured cabling industry.
  • Mechanical aptitude with the ability and desire to learn new technical skills.
  • Basic knowledge of the construction industry and familiarity with working on active job sites.
  • Experience or exposure to installing and pulling low-voltage cabling, including Cat 5 and Cat 6.
  • Ability to pull and route fiber optic cable and assist with fiber installations.
  • Basic skills in cable termination and testing for low-voltage systems.
  • Ability to read and follow construction prints and installation instructions.
  • Understanding of proper cable support methods using cable trays, J-hooks, D-rings, bridal rings, and trapeze systems.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks such as pulling cable, working on ladders, and handling tools and materials in a construction environment.
  • Strong attention to detail for organizing, dressing, labeling, and terminating cables accurately.
  • Reliable time management skills to complete tasks and paperwork within required deadlines.
  • Commitment to working safely and following OSHA and site safety practices.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • OSHA 10 certification or willingness to obtain it.
  • Experience with fiber optic cabling, including pulling and basic termination, is a plus.
  • Prior experience in structured cabling, low-voltage, or related electrical work is preferred.
  • Familiarity with building telecommunications closets, including racks, patch panels, and backboards, is beneficial.
  • Experience performing fire-stopping procedures and installing sleeves in fire-rated walls is an advantage.
  • Ability to complete project documentation such as work orders, material transfers, and change orders accurately.
  • Strong willingness to learn and progress along a defined career path within the low-voltage and cabling field.

Work Environment

This role is based on active construction project sites. The initial assignment is at a project in Ashburn, VA, with a planned transition to a project in Manassas, VA after approximately four weeks; candidates must be willing and able to transition between these project locations as required. The typical schedule is Monday through Friday from 5:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with occasional Saturday work based on project needs. Work takes place in a commercial construction environment that may involve noise, dust, and varying temperatures, and requires the use of ladders, hand tools, power tools, and cabling equipment. Technicians regularly work in ceilings, walls, and telecommunications rooms to install and support cabling infrastructure. Appropriate work attire and personal protective equipment are required in accordance with construction site and safety standards.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Manassas Park, VA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $24.00/hr.
